Mroning Folks,

I'm In a dilema, need advice.

I've inherited My Wifes freelander (after parting company with my TD5, bastard government forced me out of it with their fuel duty)

Its a Freelander 1 td4 ES on a 52 Plate, its done 130k Miles, It needs a bit of work, but is it worth it?

Back brakes are sticking, its probably the leavers from reading on here, no biggy, got slight UFO sound, could be a wheel bearing or binding rear brakes?

Clutch has slipped a couple of times while towing.... to clutch or no clutch that is the question.

We've changed the fuel pump and an injector at about 95K, I get a cloud of blue smoke when I start up from cold (proper cold), klunk from the back end when I take up drive in 1st.

Its been serviced regularly, goes like stink, never let us down. But Is it a disaster waiting to happen?

Its got other niggles like aircon dont work, but I have a window that opens that is more economical than aircon anyway and sunroof that sticks sometimes but hey, if its opens fully the sun burns my bald bit anyway!

Is it worth spending on as I havent the time to DIY or am I just throwing cash into a black hole?
Thanks in advance.

clunk at back will probably be your diffs front support bush, a known problem - cheap and easy to do yourself. sticking back brakes are probably your handbrake lever, take off drum and clean pivot pin/lever and give a smear of copperslip..cheap fix.
130K and a couple of slips does sound like you need a clutch - is the woowoo from front? if the clutch is going it might be your slave cyl/release bearing worn out too which you would naturally change with the new clutch as a matter of course.
Worth changing your engine breather for the new BMW part, this may be the cause of your smokey issues..

so apart from the clutch, most of your symptoms seem like quick cheap easy fixes.
Have a search for clutches as im sure Angeloc just had his td4 done recently.

regards
Joe

it might be oyur valve oil seals if just on Start up no problem they will not do any damage we have 2 freelanders 1 a petrol which belogs to the wife and she has done 67.000 or there abouts and is a 1998 ok she has had the head gasket problem but she is a great runner mine is a TD4 auto Auto because i have back and leg problem after breaking my neck and back but I am in the prosses of going all through it just had new hand brake cables new discs and pads new back shoes (while doing the hand brake) I do services it regular about every 12000 but landrover say every 20000 it has a new vcu and just had the auto gearbox done as i thought it was worth it as (touch wood) it is always going and it has done 168000 miles and i want to keep it hope this helps

Thanks Guys 168K, looks like I might have another 40K in her then with a bit of investment. How did you know the VCU had gone and how much £s?
Looks like handbrake overhall, Clutch and Diff mounts for me then.
Any more for any more?

Re VCU .... put car in reverse and put it on full lock try reversing does it really really tight....like handbrake is 1/2 on??? Try driving forward slowly at idle....then turn hard over full lock quickly... does it really hold back. Generally with a good vcu ... there should be some slight resistance ..... as a matter of course they generally last around 80k. Make sure all your tyres are the same make and wear ....this is critical. Cheers

Tyres are the same and changed them all at once. Yep I can feel something when reversing on full lock, Feels like its locking up as it stops..
