I fitted a new thermostat yesterday, but the gasket that I had got for it was miles out.

A quick call to the local LR main dealer this morning to let them know has resulted in a bit of head scratching. (I wasn't after a refund on a 55p part, just letting them know)

It seems that the same thermostat housing was used on all 300TDi's, whther they be Defenders, Discos, or RR classics. They all used the same four bolt housing that is reqtangular shaped.

All the 200TDi housings were, so I'm told, two bolt housings, with a bolt at 2'o'clock, and another at 8'o'clock, so to speak.

Ok, no problem. So I have a 200TDi housing fitted to a 300TDi engine. Not a problem I said. Then the parts bloke said that it looked on his system like not only was the 200TDi housing incompatable to the 300TDi head, but also that the 200TDi head was incompatable to the 300TDi block.

Can anyone share any insight into this? Engine numbers etc? Are the heads, (200 & 300) compatable?

Check engine number 200Tdi should start with 12L, 300Tdi starts 16L.

Also for reference, 200Tdi 3 bolts thermostat housing looks like this

I have both a 200tdi and 300tdi, so can tell you a few differences between the engine layout, but cannot remember much about the thermostat housing. My 300 is an early 300 without egr.

If it helps;

300 has water pump on right hand side, below the alternator. Water hoses on the rad are on the same side.

200 has water pump in middle, almost left hand side. Water hoses to rad are opposite sides.

My water pump looks to be situated in the middle, and the top and bottom hoses are at opposite ends of the rad.

where is your oil dipstick? if it's on the side, coming out on an angle, then it's the 200tdi..

also, if there is no egr on the manifold, it's a 200

There is, or rather was, an EGR. The dipstick is on the passanger side.

does the place where the egr was suppose to be been blanked, that is does it have bolts and a plate, or simply is just not there?

ok.. so you have a 300tdi.

this is a 200tdi.. you can see the oil dipstick sticking out in green on the right

also the air filter box is different, on the 200 is a cilinder, on the 300 is a rectangular box

I think the long and the short of it is that the OP has been given the wrong gasket and/or one he doesn't need!! :)

Thats parts department for you, if you said you were changing the thermostat housing then yes you would need it but just the thermostat on its own its not needed. I once asked a main dealeer for a sump copper washer they tried to give me a oil pick up pipe and said they don't use copper washers any more. Crazy fools!

Yep. It looks that way. ok, so it's only 55p, but it is the princeiple that matters. So far they have been spot on...... untill now.

99.9% certain upon reflection that it is a 300 fitted to mine.
