hi
do all freelanders have a whining sound/hum when driven 30mph and above
told tyre noise but not 100% sure:confused: also because it permanently 4 wheel drive??

most whineing comes from whats in the drivers seat ;)
only problem i was driving at the time :D

seriously i am new the 4x4'scene and been to test drive a 2004 auto diesel freelander today and it had a hum/whining noise once hit 30mph and above

ps
it does have knobbly/all weather tyres fitted on all 4 wheels
i thought bearing but unsure as told the freelander has permanent 4wd so then thought the worse ie diff etc
the dealer tried to tell me it was tyre noise but im not happy so it booked in monday with their mechanic to check it out ??
any advice welcome:eek:

how do i check drive train ??

could be caused by tyres, mines always had a bit of a whine since I bought it at 36k, got to 112k now and it still whines a bit.

doesn't seem to have got any worse.

Best advise would be to not have the same garage check over the vehicle that is selling it. You honestly think their mechanic is going to turn round and say "Yeah XYZ is fookered, it ain't worth £50 like that."

In fact, even better advice would be to buy a Defender

Seriously though, chances are it's nothing to worry about but you'd be best to get it checked independently. Or see if you can get a test drive in a few other Freelanders for comparison but it's not fool proof.

cheers guys
need to find another one to test drive as it a auto diesel model and been looking all over to find this one
but do think it's a bearing
dealer is going to fit other alloys with standard road tyres on and retest it
as one's fitted on at present look like all weather/winter tyres or at tyres with knobbly tread

If not 100% happy surely you walk away.?? otherwise you end up with a turd like mine

the dealer says its the knobbly tyres as fine with standard tyres
also been told to put full lock on and do a donut both ways and if any knocking banging etc its the vcu that's faulty
