£445 for an SMF, Valeo clutch + slave

£450 for a DMF, B+B clutch + slave

Price difference is irrelevant, looking for personal experience from those that have fitted an SMF kit, ideally.

In all reality, the car will probably not be used enough to risk a new DMF wearing out.
Have heard some stories about rattles through the gearbox, and vibrations etc. And a few snapped cranks, but seen that happen even with a DMF still fitted...

So, DMF or SMF?

Recently changed 2002 TD4 clutch and DM flywheel to SM using a LUK conversion kit £385 complete.
I did this after a lot of research one of the things that came to light was that the dual mass option was chosen by Land rover as a noise vibration and harshness countermeasure not for reliability ( people wanted diesels as smooth and quiet as petrol engines)

I also came across claims that a single mass clutch was likely to cause the crankshaft to fracture on the BMW M47 engine people spoke as if snapping crankshafts were a frequent problem with this engine in fact its failure rate is comparable to other small diesels certainly no worse.

Would I recommend the conversion certainly the first to my own 2003 hippo was 6 months ago do I notice any difference to gear change or power take up no not one iota. any change in noise or vibration if there is its to small to notice.

Just a personal view

Id go for a dmf if not huge price difference...makes the car a lot easier to drive

The M47 has been know to break a crank or two, DMF or not. The crank damper is more important to reduce the chance of crank failure. Crank dampers are known to fail.

I would stick with dmf if there is little or no difference in price and you are not anticipating replacing the clutch again.

If you are likly to wear the clutch out in the future before selling then go with a smf.

Manufacturers recommend that DM flywheels should be changed with clutch (they expect them to fail) and Having had the opportunity to look at a number of DM flywheels both failed and supposedly serviceable I must say I am not surprised.
