just aquired a dixon bate tow bar for my series 3 from carboot with a 3.5 ton pin/ball coupling for a measly sum of 5 beer tokens....looks the same as the ones on paddocks site as i cannot check with my landy as its locked up at work....just rusty thats all......needs bolts only:D

As a fellow Yorkshireman I can applaud your frugality at getting a bargain.;)

Once you scrape off all the loose rust and sand it down.. try painting it with Smoothrite satin black which has built-in rust stabiliser and inhibitor. I painted my entire rear crossmember and tow fixings and it looks great and not a spot of rust anywhere.

took awhile as well to prise my fingers off the fiver too:D

Throw it in a fire, leave it for 30 minutes, Get it out remembering it will be slightly warm, Let it cool naturally and rub down with a wire brush.. Back to bare metal, And use Smoothrite like said.. Jobs a good un

nice one, i got one of them for 30quids once but spent 2hours hacking it off the back of the rustiest chasis i'd ever seen! bargin! :D

all the bolts have been cut off from the back and rusted in....will wait till i am back at work then i can put in vice and use the windy gun on them:D

a windy gun would have been ace that day, 3 blunt drill bits and an angle grinder with fook all disc were all i had!

ended up putting it off with a chain and me landy! :p

why would you want to anneal it? This would only make the metal softer..

You wouldnt get it hot enough to anneal it.. Your only burning paint and rust off.. But if you was to plan on towing I wouldnt do the tow ball, Just the drop plate.. Mines perfect now.. Long as you dont get it glowing RED hot you'll be fine.. Just dont throw it in a bucket of cold water as that can crack it with the rapid heat change.

a fiver is a bargain, i eventually got 1 off ebay for £7.50 n the tow ball n jaw for the same, even wi postage at 15 quid i thought it was a result.:D
