More importantly, your other half needs to have the patience of a saint. Mine hit the bricks after I cancelled date night one times too many because the RR needed some TLC. Suppose it means my RR wasn't the least reliable woman in my life.

It moved when I hit it, it isn't dead yet.
I am incredibly lucky with my other half, she is totally understanding when the Rangie comes first, but I think that is so she can bribe the feck outta me later for clothes and shoes!!:)

Very true - the golden rule of Range Rover buying - never buy one with faults unless you know the full story and are fully aware of the potential repair costs etc...

Fair Game....

And if you do know all of this information and are able to fix the fault. Haggle the **** out of the price. They will be struggling to shift it if it is faulty. Use that to your advantage. As long as you offer over what they paid for it, they'll snap your hand off if it means it is off their forecourt.

She was fine when I had a ropey old Escort Van which ate up my time. I guess when I upgraded she expected something Japanese built and works every time? But on the plus, the money I saved this year buying her a Yule gift I can invest in a new battery as the one in it has just **** the bed.

Never buy a P38 with a known problem, garage must be worried or they would not have sent it to be fixed. Whatever the fault, the fix will be done at minimum cost, just enough to get it off the forecourt.
If bigredtaxi has no patience with breakdowns, the P38 is not a good buy.:)

Find out what they say first...then come on here and see if their report stacks up....

They are great vehicles, but are unreliable - sometimes you get a cracker with minor niggles, other times they can be a nightmare, you never know, this one might be a cracker with a hiccup...is all.

To Be honest the dealer is 30 miles from me.... his warranty is for 3 months on engine and gearbox only... he could have not mentioned the sagging suspension to me and pumped it up before i arrived and claimed it was ok when i bought it..... i have to give him credit for being honest about the suspension...and putting it straight in to be fixed... I could buy one from anywhere with no faults apparent only to find a week later a fault i couldn't claim was there when i bought it... i have done basic work on cars... changing water pump on audi coupe...brake discs on all cars.. exhausts.. wheel bearings.. servicing... im pretty competent in DIY so i think im relatively handy with tools... i do lack experience and skill in engine/gearbox internals and electronics/computers... i dont mind fixing stuff.... just not every two weeks... i was going to build a kit car many years ago... i do have enthusiasm... i guess im going in with my eyes wide open.... as opposed to eyes wide shut.... its been a long time since i bought a car this old... most of my other cars have been on PCP new or nearly new...and sent back after 3 years... I do want a Rangie... not for off roading... mainly because where i live gets cut off in the snow... and im fed up putting snow chains on and off.... If i buy the car and have to fix it... im hoping with your guys help... i will be able to diagnose and sort it myself... with a garage servicing it for the history... im not a big girls blouse when it comes to getting my hands dirty....
I guess its a big unknown buying any second hand car... especially one with a reliability record only beaten by the Titanic.. but as you guys said... its a lifestyle thing..and i will learn more as i submerge myself into the murky pond of RR ownership..... still worried... but will wait see what the dealer says was the problem ..thank you dfor all your honest replies...and humour!!:behindsofa:

TBH if i had known what i now know about RR and their issues i probably would not have bought one.
Saying that, just over a year later, and after a lot of minor and not so minor probs(never been near a dealer yet tho) because of the people on here and their willingness to help, i am glad i did buy it,as i now have a p38 which has NO FAULTS whatsoever and has been my daily driver all this time.

Hope it doesn't hear me .

So if you have basic tools and skills, and are determined to own one, take the leap and bear in mind it may or may not be totally reliable, but apart from a Nanocom you will not need any other specialist tools to keep it in shape.
But most of all you will adore it when you are not fixing it!!

Just my tuppence worth.;)

If you have the patience and DIY mechanic skills they are not too bad to work on, just never expect it to be without niggles from headlinings falling to wheel wobble. Mines never let me down but has never been free of problems either.

When I was looking I couldn't find any P38s without faults. They all needed something doing them whether trivial or major jobs. Suppose you need to do a bit of a research first to find out whether something is a simple DIY or a ball ache £££s to fix type job.

Mine was fault free when i bought it. That was 10 months ago. Alot happens in the RR world in 10 months lol.

Just spoke to dealer re my ( soon to be mine) P38 2001 4.0 V8 County RR..(£3900) FSH 78000miles...... After dealer delayed me picking car up due to sagging suspension .. Result of specialist investigation :
2 rear Ride height sensors replaced
EAS Compressor replaced
Actuator valve replaced
Reset EAS system
EAS Airbags were all ok apparently
Serviced
Dent man for 2 small dents
Seat electric height adjustment repaired
All EAS work done at independant specialist (4x4) no affiliation to dealer selling.
He has apparently forked out £700.. To prepare the car for me,
And having had the EAS professionally checked , I still have a 3 month P&L warranty in engine and trans..
Picking it up Thursday
Pics to follow soon after!!
Slightly less nervous about purchase....

So you should be. Sounds like a nice motor. Good to have the eas sorted. We await the piccies.

What's the average life expectancy of airbags? And is it better to replace them as a precaution.. Even if they are apparently working ok? I see there are a set of 4 Dunlop ones for £200...

If it aint broke dont fix it. They should last about 7 - 8 years from new (depending on quality I suppose). Keep the money in the Rangey fund. Something else might happen before your airbags start leaking. You could always check them with some soapy water in a spray bottle.
Drive it and enjoy.

If they look original, replace them. An exploding airspring at 70 is not to be recommended nor is riding on the bump stops. Life is 7/8 years 80K miles:)

If you do not have the patience of a saint when things go wrong and the mechanical ability of an F1 pit crew, cut and run.

After being ignored by the dealer and kept waiting for another week...i finally lost my patience when the dealer again told me the car was not ready after me waiting two weeks for it to have ists suspension fixed.. waiting for parts was the last straw... I told him i wanted my deposit back and no longer wanted the car... this was a week last friday... he told me he would post me a cheque... after waiting a week...and being fobbed off that " the check is in the post" i decided to just turn up at his garage... to say he looked worried was an understatement... (took the wife as a witness) after some evasiveness and him saying...why have you come...why are you here i sent the cheque... i got a bank transfer refund immediately £500 is a lot of money... and left... no sign of the rangie on his forecourt... three weeks by then after he said it would be fixed... not sure if it was all a scam... i will be monitering his website for the next month... I have now after a very traumatic experience walked away from buying a P38... I thank all of you who have given me advice... I can now sleep at night... i also now have 4 new snow tyres in my garage...waiting for the fitters to have xmas... before i fit them to my Merc E Class (owned 2 years) a lucky escape prehaps...
