In Dispair folks, had my Defender 90 (1987) just over a month and contimplating selling it. I put redex in the tank (idiot) that cost me £200 to fix but she is running better than ever however, local garage man reckons it is an MOT failure due to the bulkhead being in such a bad state. I have found out that Bulkheads for this age of Defender are hard to come buy and at a price of £600 -800 then there is the paint job and then there is the fitting. I do not have the skill, work space or confidence to carry this out so I am thinking of selling her and buying a small van. Am I just being daft or should I perciver and get the job done at a risk of spending £1000-£1500 and possibly being with out a car for a couple of weeks (local garage man is not quickest at turning jobs around)? What do you lot think?

fear not. you can get a brand new bulkhead for around 250 off ebay, i usually charge £400 to fit a new one so thats 650 plus the paint job, not so bad after all eh ;)

Where did you get that price from? prices as low as £150 have been bandied about on here.

Can the bulkhead be patched? Have you shopped around for the repair work.

What van could you get for £1000-£1500 and would you enjoy it as much as the Landie?

Alas, the ones on Ebay are for a TD5 and the holes need modified.Yella Disco, I'd take you up on your offer but you are in Wales and I am in Scotland unless you are looking for a holiday in the next couple of weeks??

I have spoke to Paddocks and Craddocks both have none in stock and gave the higher quotes. Nick Evans has one but won't post it. Craddoks said there were a surplus of them going cheap and now they are rare and gone way up in price. I have the outer edge skins that could be welded on however the majority of the damage is under the bonnet around where the wires go through it.

Don't want to hijack your thread Jaff, but, Yella are the door pillars part of the bulkhead, or would the original ones have to be cut of the old ones and welded to the new ones and what other welding needs to be done to fit a new bulkhead.

yep, it will fit the 90 , surely there must be an independant landy garage up your way, join yer local landy club then ask them who they use to do their repairs ;)

yes grunt, the door pillars come as part of the bulkhead, no welding needs to be done at all its all nuts and bolts and wires and cables ;)

NO landy club to join. Will take a trip tommorrow to local Landy Garage for second opinion. Just spoke to the guy on EBAY and it sounds promising. Need to rejig the trasmission to make it fit but that is all.

Cheers for all the advice and help so far.
