Hi all newbie here! I wonder if anyone can help, appreciate any assistance, I've just bought a disco 2 es auto 110k full history, not perfect but it's a 2002 car! Engine is good as far as I can tell, but it has this annoying noise at exactly 2500 rpm owned the car a day and been driving it a fair bit to work it out, I initially thought it was the gear box but just been out and revved it in a lay by and although hard to hold 2500 it does make the noise, which has put my mind to rest re gearbox! But is still annoying!!!! I've looked online and a few people mention heat shields, can anyone help? It does sound like something is resonating, also while I'm here drove the car 10 miles ( been using it all day for short trips, and for a brief moment the red gearbox light came on, and went off, was coming off a dual arraign way on the slip road with a slight incline, does this light come on much? Manual just says stop let it cool down and carry on! Should I worry or is this just a dodgy wire or something? Was driving at 70 any help advise appreciated

Hi John,

Welcome to the loonyzone.

Might help if you give a bit more detailed info on what the noise sounds like..........?? Never looked at a D2 auto , so not sure what the red light is for or what causes it.
One, thing is when was the gearbox last serviced? oil change etc.
Also, make sure you have your EKA code.

Cheers

its worth changing oil on the gear box youd need 5 litres of dexron 3,but temp switches in the oil cooler hose do play up quite often,id need more info on the noise but check all turbo hoses to and from intercooler

Thanks guys, I'm going to get the box oil done asap, the noise reminds of a snare drum I don't know how else to explain it!! I'm sure tin metal would make this sort of noise

Thank you! Ok newbie here what's an eka code?

You may be right about the heat shield causing the noise, is it loose?

Mine had a rivet or two that were knackered, I drilled them out and replaced with nut and bolts, making the removal of the heat shield an easy job.

Cheers

I've see a few posts about various heat shields which one are you referring to? Am intending to have a poke about tomorrow see if anything obvious is lose

The one you will see straight away is over the turbo.

You cannot miss it.... :D

Cheers

Hi all still got this stupid vibration noise, it's still at exactly 2500 rpm so annoying the exhaust on under cab wasnlose so I've packed it out with heat retard material to stop that one vibrating and still doing it, upper turbo one seems solid, thought the plastic engine cover might be doing it so took that off, is there anything bybthe bulk head? So annoying as car crusies at 2500

Can you post a video of it?

Does it do it when stationary and revved to 2.5K?

Cheers
Yea it does it whilst stationary not as bad but it's there, just had another poke about the turbo heat shield is in good shape, rivers all solid but the metal of it when you flick it does resonate, if I had to say where it's coming from I'd say around gearbox, but that's a guess when driving, I've noted also a previous owner has cut off the side steps and left the mounting points which are also if you flick them resonate ( bet it was the steeler to tidy up the car) it's going in to have the ace removed and replaced with bars so I'll ask them then as they will have ramps etc be easier to find it, so annoying!!

Ok so the plot carries on been sorting a few bits on the car drives great even had a chip done and a few other jobs so discovery is looking and running well, bar this vibration, I've had the ace system taken off replaced with bars etc so that's all good now gearbox been flushed and fluid replaced. The ONLY issue really is this vibration issue, I've been hunting far and wide online had the local garage look at it also, they had it on ramp and their opinion is it's in the gearbox casing, three things have come up in forums and with garage, 1 damper pulley, 2 dual mass flywheel 3 engine and gearbox mounts, sorry 4 exhaust.

The issue is a droning noise that comes in around 2250 -2500rpm but goes above and below this, it's happened since the day I bought car, stood still or driving it's there and something to do with harmonics of engine. I've tried tightening everything I can see. So does anyone have any views as some of the ideas are high cost! Secondly John cradocks list a pulley for £110 but everyone is talking 3-400 so is it any good? I don't know them at all really just assume they are well known and sell decent stuff any thoughts oh wise forum? John ps it's an auto.

Ok so not posted a while on this but noticing a lot of people mentioning the same rpm and a vibration so it’s obviously common, to date I have changed auto box oil and filter, chipped the car, had the front pulley damper replaced, ace system removed, cars still has vibration at 2500, so I’ve seen people mention exhaust flex pipe and heat shield and engine and gearbox mounts. Not much else. I’ve heard one thread mention something in the bulk head about a plate working lose but I have no idea what, I’ve also heard people talk about a rattle from the hand break but this is easy to Identify by pulling up hand break and it changes, mine doesn’t!. Anyway today, after the pulley was replaced and made zero difference, I’ve bodged up the flexipipe link on exhaust with metal hose jubilee clips, as it seemed a bit too lose and when you move it could hear rust and just not nice feeling, looks fine outside though, anyway ran car up the road and it’s actually changed the noise a lot!!! So the vibration is still there but the tone and impact is much less, I will have exhaust changed and probably move into engine and gearbox mounts! Just thought people might find the info useful! John.

I looked this up recently as I have the exact rattle in my Discovery 2 at exactly the same rpm. Surprisingly only took a minute to find it’s the block bolted on next to the transmission (hand brake) drum. It has dropped (it moves up and down due being a bit loose) and rests against the main chassis causing the rattle. You can easily reach under with one arm from the driver side with the door open and push the accelerator with the other. Rattle stops when you lift it from touching the chassis rail. It’s a 15mm nut by the handbrake drum that holds the arm of that block, once tightened, problem fixed. I’m going to try loctite next time as the nut periodically comes loose and the rattle starts.Cheers Rob
