I have a discovery2 which when setting off in D the car would drive and rev to 3000rpm then go into limp home mode.

I have drained some oil and compared it to ATF dextron2 and it looks dark.

Do you think its the clutch and which one?

if it reverses ok clutch pack A which is first one behind pump plate in the box can be done fairly easily ,stand box on its rear with bell housing up ,undo all bolts in bell housing 17mm socket, remove bell housing and pump plate, blates look brown if good blackish if burnt , plates are about £3-5 each

I believe the previous owner had the fault code read and he said something about the gearbox speed sensor been faulty.

As far as i can remember reverse was okay.

From what i understand if the gearbox input sensor is reading alot different from the gearbox output sensor it sensors clutch slip and goes into limp home mode,

Would this be relating to clutch a?

Sorry about all the questions, I am the type of person that would like to take the box apart myself to replace the faulty parts but dont have a gearbox repair manual. If anyone has one available to send me that would be great?

a few things the box works by mutliple clutch packs locking different combinations of epicyclic gear sets ,clutch A shows with poor or loss of forward drive B with reverse

Personally for the time and cost involved I would be changing the fluid and then see what happens.

It'll only take you perhaps 15-20mins to do, plus 5 ltrs of Dexron IID or III
