During the snow last week someone crashed through my wall and in to the rear of my disco.
I had just spent a fortune getting it through the mot as there was quite a bit of welding needed doing. She was running sweet as a nut.
Anyhow, she has been written off as a class C due to the cost of repair.
The damage was:
Rear light cluster smashed
Plastic corner piece on bumper is loose
The lower rear panel is slightly dented and scratched, however there is a piece the size of a mobile phone ripped out of the bottom of the panel with a sharp edge.
I have been told that the write off is purely due to the cost of repairs in relation to the value of the car, nothing structural.
I have been offered a settlement figure and asked if I want the car back for £75.00 duh, of course.
I have been told that I need an MOT, no problem as it has only just passed ( Obviously I need to get the repairs done first) but a VOSA inspection. Can anyone tell me what this involves please?

Cat C for that amount of damage seems excessive to me. But after repairs done it'll need an MOT and a VIC test, nothing to the VIC test to worry about, get it bought back and get it fixed. ;)

Sorry, should have told you that a VIC (vehicle identity check) is just to make sure the vehicle is still the same vehicle as before the accident.

It will only be a vehicle identification inspection that vosa will do, I think I am right in saying this won't be needed if you still retain the v5, ie you have not sent it to insurance company..
 
A vosa inspection is just to make sure that the identity of the car is the same and not a ringer, plus that all repairs have been done safely. No filler where metal should be.

It's easy and shouldn't be of any concern if the damage is minimal.

The old girl was insured for £2000 , repair company valued it at 1600 pounds and cost of repairs was estimated at over a thousand pounds. I am assuming that the auto repair company were pricing Landrover parts, including a new rear panel plus spray painting etc.
This is in excess of the 40 percent of value before writing it off.
Garage that I use are spot on and know the old girl (they have spent enough time on her) and will sort it out for me.
The damage to bodywork is slight dents and scratching, nothing major and definitely not worth replacing a whole panell and the cost.

my brother messes around with accicdent damaged vehicles, nearly all what he gets have next to nothing wrong with them, easy repairs, yours sounds as though it will be a doddle! as for VOSA, you have to book it in at a testing station, an inspector takes the car and goes and looks underneath and around
it, checks all identification plates, then jobs a good one, a car that age especially a disco, who cares about it being a cat C, there loads on here far worse with rust than a cat c, being repaired and still in use today,

my last disco got written off due to someone hitting it, scuff on the door and dent in the lower rear quater panel. cat c write off, £1200 payout with £150 buy back. bought then sold it for £650 salvage. get it fixed, my current disco is a cat c but didn't know until after i paid or it doh
 
as mentioned above the vic check is only to make sure the vehicle is not stolen or a ringer but it will then say on the v5 that "this vehicle was substantially damaged in 2012/2013".there is no problem having a cat c write off apart from some insurance companies will only offer 3rd party cover but all you need to do is make sure its not going to get stolen or your not going to crash it! at the price you have been offered it back for its a bargain! the only reason it will have been wrote off for would be down to genuine Land Rover parts and the labour costs it is also down to the engineer who inspects the vehicle as to how it is categorised as another engineer may have only classed it as a "D" but either way repair it and just enjoy it as its too old to worry about it being a cat c.
