Hi Guys, newbie here. Been lurking around for a while but need some advice so thought it was about time I joined up !

Got a 200TDI Auto 94, last time I used it no problems, went to start today no dash lights and will not crank over. Obviously thought flat battery so took off and gave a good charge but still the same problem.
The wipers, hazards, clock, radio, interior light all work but there is no oil / battery light and will not crank over. When you turn the key to crank position the clock goes off but the interior light does not.

Any advice much appreciated as it is driving me mad ! :)

Peter

This sounds a bit like the problem I had with my wife's Tdi 200 and it was resolved by changing the ignition switch.

If I might suggest, try analysing the operation of the switch itself. Does it feel normal? When you turn it clockwise slowly, do you get any indication of loose or failing elec connection?

Good call, although the ignition does feel normal and definately works as in turning on so the wipers etc work, also when you turn to crank the radio etc goes off, which I believe is normal to give maximum cranking power. Would there be several circuits in the switch, which would make somethings work and not others ?

To me that sounds more & more like the switch is faulty. The radio going off is not normal on either of my Discos, when I crank them over.

There are from memory about 4 circuits so it could well be that only one is going down.

Incidently on the Tdi 200 there are some main fuses that are hidden from site at the back left hand side as you look into the engine bay from the front of the vehicle. They are wrapped in a sort of gauze cloth.

Thanks, I just would have thought if the switch had gone it would be a bit intermittant. One day it was perfect the next not.

I have hunted high and low for these fuses but cant see anything ? I have traced all wires from the battery and the loom just goes round and across the bulk head with various connectors, and wires peeling of to various items others going through the bulkhead into the cab, nothing in the engine bay looks anything like fuses ? Where exactly are they ?

Thats got nothing to do with it, if the solenoid was stuck it would either turn the engine over constantly or just not work when I turned the key.

Remember I have no indicators or red warning lights, and its not the battery as I have tried jumping it off a lorry battery.

was the lorry battery charged?

What a helpful post  I may be struggling to cure the problem but I am not retarded.

Let me spell it out again in simple terms, when I turn on the key the radio, wipers, washers, lights, hazzards all work and all at full power. I Have no red warning lights or glow plug light, no indicators or fan and it wont crank. If the battery had enough charge to run the lights it would light the red warning lamps and the indicators would work.

From other helpful posts I would assume a blown main fuse, which remains elusive or a dodgy ignition switch.

;)

I had the same prob with me mates disco swapped fuses relays and light stalks/ hazard switches all to no avail after a bit of prodding and a lot of cursing I discovered that the ignition switch was getting a live supply to it while switched to position 1 & 2 but lost?? the live when switched to the cranking position. I cured it by cutting away the insulation from the live supply to the hazard switch. As this is permanently live. and did the same thing with the ignition live. then spliced a wire across both wires. It's been fine ever since.

Thanks, I see what you mean but the switch does work in position 1 & 2 just not for everything, example if I turn the wipers on, they switch on and off when I turn the key on and off, so I suppose it is either one circuit within the switch or a fuse. :)

Try a temporary live supply to the back of the ignition switch Brown/white wire IIRC, and see if that cures the problem

Will try that tommorrow, thanks.

Don't suppose you know where these fuses are for me to try as well ? Just incase I draw a blank with the ignition switch.

If you have a look at the attached picture of the lefthand side of the engine bay, you will see some cables which are wrapped in a sort of gauze material.

I've been led to believe (never looked myself) that there are one or more main fuses within that wrap.

Now, is that clear and helpful enough for you !!!
