Hi Mark, before you start, as well as normal workshop tools you will need to ensure that you have a Torx bit size 55, quality 32mm ring spanner and a large syringe (I use a 500ml one) or oil pump (for getting the new oil in !!). And 3 ltrs of MTF94 oil.

OK, step by step:

1. for a short drive to warm up the oil.

2. park the vehicle on level ground;

3. get underneath the vehicle and find the level fill plug, it's on the drivers side of the gearbox. Slacken this off, but don't fully undo this yet;

4. using a 32mm ring spanner, undo the gearbox drain plug (these can be quite tough) and allow oil to pour out into a suitable container - there should be about 2.5ltrs.

5. Now take out the level fill plug fully, and allow at least 10 mins for all the oil to drain out. Time for coffee.

6. Once the old oil is all out, replace the drain plug;

7. Now start to refill the box with clean new MTF94 oil. It will take at least 2.2 litrs. When it starts to overflow back out, you have the correct level.

Without having looked at my manual for the TD5, is if the same oil for the diffs?

I just read a thread for a 300tdi saying the EP90 goes in both the diffs and the gearbox.

YOU NEVER, EVER USE EP OILS IN THE MAIN GEARBOX; you should use EP80w-90 oils (to GL5 specification) for the transfer box and axles.

DUH.. Sorry, I did actually mean transfer box.

Numpty points coming my way.

Basically I was after asking if it's the same for the TD5? EP90 for axles and TRANSFER box.. I didn't read the original correctly and just managed to cock the rest up quite easily

That was, without doubt, the nicest and fullest explanation of a cock-up I've heard in a long year - it made me smile, so well done.

Incidently, large quantites of numpty points in post :D:D:D

Ps The oil to use is EP80w-90 GL5. If you can afford it EVO2 from Difflock.com is brilliant stuff - but it's about £12 per ltr. 6 ltrs will do your TD5 tranfer box and both axles.
 
Anyone know an easy place to get MTF94-tried local places,no luck-paddocks have it but can't ship it (some regulation)-seen small quantitys on ebay but looks dear with shipping per litre(dunno how they can ship it?).Any oil equivalents from other manufacturers-found an amisol product but thats in the states-any ideas?

Your nearest LR dealer will have it. Otherwise speak to your local motor factors who should be able to get it for you.

Alternatively use EVO1 from www.difflock.com and they do ship that.
 
Hi guys, I am going to swap the oil on my TD5 discovery gear box, but thinking about bottling out😢 I am worried about the torque settings as I don’t have a torque wrench (saving up for one and a decent socket set) will I be ok with a large adjustable spanner? I have the torx bit for the filler plug .
I have also got a new filler plug amd drain washer coming.
Any advice greatly appreciated

Hi Andy, just to be clear, you are talking about the main 5-speed gearbox, not the transfer box or an automatic gearbox ?
 
Ok, here's a few helpful comments then a how to, OK ?
Warm oil flows better/easier so when you are changing any oils always try to get them warm before starting to change the oil.

With gearboxes and diffs always, always slacken (but do remove immediately) the fill plug. It is not at all unknown for someone to start emptying the oil out of a gearbox or diff before checking to see that they can undo the fill plug and find that they can't shift it.

So to the exact process :

1. Slacken the oil level/fill plug but do not remove;

2. Prepare the item you plan to catch the all in (bowl or whatever) ;

3. Remove the sump drain plug and allow old oil to flow out ;

4. Now remove the oil level/fill plug, to allow the oil to flow out easier;

5. Once the oil is pretty-much all out, reinstall the sump drain plug with a new washer and just nip it up tight (NOT Gorilla tight!) ;

6. Now commence to put in the new oil. This can be a bit awkward unless you have a 500ml syringe or similar. So get the new oil in, until it starts to trickle back out. You have now reached the correct level.

7. Reinstall level/fill plug and snug it up - not Gorrilla tight.

And you're done !

Well I should have checked, my side steps amd big gut won’t let me fit underneath 🤣
Ooops, jack it up, axle satnds then do the biz, letting it down to finish the drain and again once you've filled it up, jacking it that side up. You'll lose a lickle bit but not too much of a bovva eh?
You could use a plant sprayer to fill it wiv, I use it for ATF on my auto which is also a sod to get to. One of the ones with a pipe and a lance, i.e. the one on the left.

Just take the end off the lance. I too am rather too large to squeeze under!! But being able to pressurise it then trigger it makes it much easier. ;)
