There would be a lot of work involved, apart from the box itself, you'd need the different trim and gear selector, ECU for the box, kick-down linkage and re-programme the engine ECU, change the engine flywheel and fit flexplate and starter ring and so on.
Even allowing for cheap parts etc., it's a marginal job on costs alone, but it can be done. If you had the donor parts sitting on the floor ready to go, it would be a very good weekends work to fit plus a trip to the dealer, assuming that the vehicle would run without reprogramming of the ECU.

Hi,
I am new to the Landrover world and am currently looking for a 99/00 TD5, I have found a lovely looking ES but it has a manual geabox, Is it possible to change it to an Auto??
Please help, any comments welcomed.

Don't even think about it Matt, the numbers just don't add up.
If you did do it, you would want to ensure that you ended up with a reliable car wouldn't you? So best case scenario is a recon autobox from Ashcrofts, cost £725+vat plus a core charge of £500 (as you don't have an autobox to give them in return!!).
Then new pedal box, gearbox ECU, I think you might need a new engine ECU as I read somewhere that they are not interchangeable.
Don't know if the manual 'box transfer box will work with the auto gearbox.
You might be talking in the order of £3000 to get this done and the car's value might be adversely affected by this modification that some buyers wouldn't trust.
As I said at the beginning, from a numbers perspective it just doesn't add up, sorry.
Keep looking and find yourself a nice original auto, they drive really well.

I ended up with the Manual ES and absolutley love it, was just a bit worried that my wife wouldnt be able to push the clutch down but she appears well chuffed with the whole package.
Just got to wait for the weekend to arrive so I can go out and play! Why do we have to work for 5 days then 2 off? surely would be better the other way round.

The ES spec is nice isn't it
I have a 01 ES that was converted from manual to auto quite early in its life. All is in order and it seems perfect. The only slight thing missing is that the digital display on the dash does not show P-R-D etc, but I usually know when I am parked, going backwards or forwards!
