I hope you don't think that those two engines are the same.... did you ever hear how a PD/EUI engine is built and working? ... i think not as long as you compare it with a 300Tdi :confused: ... there are special oils for PD engines if you want the best.. if you just want to have oil in it to not be stressed that the engine is not lubricated then yes... put what ever sh*t you want or go back untill post #7, read carefully again maybe you'll understand and gain some thoughtfulness to not recommend unproper oils to others
Hi there I can’t find pd oils which aren’t acea c3, this is low ash oil for modern engines and generally have Little ZDDP which is an anti wear additive
 
The closest to Td5s are the VW 5 cylinder 2.5 PD engines which are aprox the same generation not more modern at all and they need dedicated PD oil(505.01) to last long... when i realised to use PD oil in mine after many hours of study i felt the engine running smoother and quieter with Comma PD 5w40 oil than what ever oil was used in it before

td5 is like a rover v8 , the v8 has flat hydraulic tappets the td5 a cam working injectors both need high pressure lube ,theres no other reason for a dedicated oil

I defer to your knowledge when it comes to mechanics but for me it's logical to use PD oil in a PD engine, simple as that :cool:
 
Sorry to jump in gent but how many litters does the td5 hold? Also what would yous say is the best diff and transmission oil cheers gents.
 
You have to buy 8l of engine oil, put in 7.2l and keep the rest for top up if the level drops a bit over the year... for diffs and transfer box 75w90, for gearbox you can use Dexron III in both auto or manual but IMO the best for manual MTF94 especially when it's really cold outside
 
Your a star mate a knew around the 7L 8L for engine oil but was not to sure. Also coolant which is the best for the td5? Also any good additives for engine trans diffs ?
 
You dont need additives if you change the oil on regular basis, for coolant use concentrated OAT mixed 50% with water

Hi so your advice is to put 5w40 in the td5? I have been using 5W-30 but you know what I am trying to clean the oldie up and I get the impression 5w40 might be a good step for me next? My goal is to tow and be on a motorway doing 60mph and have the smoothest ride. I’ve now found a 5w40 PD oil fully synt which is c3 so I am going to go with this one this year I think. Thanks

If that is what you like, I am sure it will be fine.
We just used to use Comma synthetic 5/30 in the Td5, didn't seem to cause any problems.

Yeah I think 5w30 fully synth worked well for me for the past few years. Done 90k now and tend to only be towing when it’s time to go out in the boat (warmer than average weather) so it’s prompted me to change.

What i was trying to say is that if you want THE BEST oil for the Td5 you use an oil which was dedicated for PD/EUI engines cos that's what the Td5 is... it will run even with sunflower oil as long as the sump is full if that's what you want and if that bullet-proof engine doesnt fail in 100K miles means that sunflower oil is the best?:rolleyes: .... i rest my case cos that oil discussion becames hilarious
 
Sorry to open the wound of an old thread but there are so many oil threads I decided against another.

I’ve used Triple QX Premium semi synthetic 5w30 for years but leaning towards fully synthetic PD now, the following looks a decent shout on eBay, would it be OK?

I’ve driven myself stupid with A1/B1 - A5/B5- to use C3 or not C3, what a nightmare subject

Wondering if this is the Holy Grail, a VW 505.01 oil (I believe the “.01” is PD) that isn’t C3 (I know there’s debate about C3 being suitable for td5’s)

It’s A3/B3, A3/B4 which is listed in the handbook as alternative to A1/B1.

You have to take Mannol's approvals with a pinch of salt, they have been prosecuted for using approvals they don't have! And their 5w30 is water thin. Their oil is suspiciously cheap compared to others.
