My 2001 Disco has just failed it's MOT due to the horn failing. A local LR garage advised, over the phone, that it was probably the contact ring behind the steering wheel, that the airbag would have to be deacivated, the wheel removed, and the ring replaced - total cost around £350. Ouch! They warned not to attempt it myself in case anything popped. The horn fuse is intact, the horns work if wired to a battery.

Can anyone help please.

The contact ring is often referred to as a rotary coupler. These can be bought off Ebay 2nd hand for £25-30. It's an easy job to do and any diy mechanic can do it. Will take about 30 mins.

Just make sure you remove the battery neg lead 30mins before starting, to ensure no probs with the airbag.

Have you tried changing the relay in the fuse box under the bonet.. 2nd one in lefthand top as you look at it. Its also marked on the lid. Mine stopped working. I changed the relay works perfectly..

easy job, as said ! i have done it myself :) Takes a torque socket thingy and can take the air bag off. then make sure steering is locked so u put wheel back on straight, and then a socket cant remember size to remove steering wheel may take a small amount of brute force , swop coupler then repeat process backwards job done :)

Hi. I placed a noet on the forum re horn failure on my Disco some time ago. Work in the MEA region and have had no access to anything for ages. Just picked up your message re a horn relay and wonder if you still have it? Would appreciate an update. Many thanks, Joe 0780 5932155

I had the same problem I too looked for the more complex problems but guess what I changed BOTH horns and bingo they worked sometimes its the simple things that work, and there not very expensive
