Hi there
I have fitted a discovery 200tdi into my series using the discovery radiator.
The problem I have, it's running at 55 degrees.
I have taken out the thermostat and tested it. It's opening an closing fine.
I have no air locks. It just seems as it's cooling too much.
After a 20 mile journey with the expansion cap off the water temp is warm, ie I can put my finger in the water.
The water level is fine. It's just running cold. Also I have removed the cooling fan as well.........is this a common problem......aaaaahhhhhhh

unfortunately I'm new to land rovers but I have a disco with a 200tdi and that warms up and holds at half way on the temp gauge but my mk3 cavalier tends to run cool during the winter and hot in the summer so it could just be that the radiator is doing it's job over time due to the current ambient temperature
 
all winter, most of the year (as I forget its there)
I have a sheet of cardboard covering half my rad off.

(you must ensure its the correct side as to not cover any inter cooler off)

I leave it long enough so that it has enough to grab hold of to pull out with the bonnet up.
during the summer the blanking cardboard lives under the carpet in the back...


done a 30 odd mile run yesterday, and had to turn the heater down a bit ;)
 
I think this may be my only option. Of course I could run it with less water. Lol

my rad is not in pristeen condition,
and I only top up with neat antifreeze from our 99p shop,
so it began to go blue in places where it must have a very slight leak.

the small bottle of radseal from the 99p shop stopped the slight leak.

That's fine. days are long working on land rovers :)
i going to replace the thermostat although its working the water pressure may be affecting it. its all i have left....watch this space.
 
The 300TDi in my Discovery runs at about 1/3 the way up the gauge and, according to the previous owner, has always done so regardless of weather and speed.

My SIII petrol used to have the needle drop off the bottom of the temp gauge in winter whenever it got stuck in traffic.

There's just too much air around the engine - it's cooling itself without having to rely on the radiator (until you hit a hill with a loaded trailer on the back or the weather gets hot).

Removing the fan won't save you anything if it's not getting warm enough to open the 'stat. I suggest you put it back on before summer.
 
My 200 and 300 have never had a fan, even on summer days sat in traffic the needle stays in the middle. Takes about a mile to fully walm up. As said above try some cardboard over the rad.

I work with landys 6 days a week now both driving and repairing them. Don't know what I have done to deserve that :).

Let us know if a thermostat swap works.

Well put a new stat in today. Went for a blast down the motorway at 60mph(top speed on defender 1.6 transfer box) and it's running about 10 degrees hotter. It has made a difference. I will just have to face facts she runs cooler.

hmmm, are you relying on a gauge reading ?
perhaps the gauge is lying ?

if after a blast at speed :rolleyes:
the engine oil should be hot also, along with the water.
have you felt both by hand :eek::eek::eek:
when you stopped after the motor way..
