The age of Defender you're allowed to import is a very different beast to your Disco and will need a LOT of work/conversion to get to the standard you're accustomed to - worthwhile though................................

My disco was mainly used for traveling across the us, and on a lot of back roads, Sand dunes, etc.

The defender would be used for the same thing, just traveling and spending time off paved roads for camping.

Sounds a bit like you also need something to do with your spare time, "Land Rover more than a means of transport, it's a hobby", my '98 Tdi 300 version helps keep me busy, mind you I really love it, but I also have a Toyota, for the times I need absolute reliability,(but it wont go off road where Disco goes), and what's wrong with a Jeep, my mate has an older diesel version (VM?), not sure what year but he swears by it, (and at it occasionally).

I have a bunch of vehicles.

I own a business, and this is the kinda stuff I like to do in my spare time. Tinker with vehicles, and take some time to travel and explore with my girlfriend.

As some will say the VM engine in the Range rover is noisy and can be a bit sluggish.
But Jeep managed to make do something with it and it had plenty of power.

When I was thinking about putting a tdi in my series 2 I came across a video on youtube about the conversion being done for series vehicles over in the states. A guy over there sources low mileage TDI engines from vehicles over here that have failed MOT's mainly 300tdi engines but im sure he could source other parts too even a whole discovery. I think, but cant be certain as I haven't watched the video for sometime, they are based in Connecticut and called north American overland might be worth contacting them via their website.

People want crazy money for all the parts here, that is why I decide I would just try and source everything myself...

I didn't realize that Defenders were so cheap, so it might be in my best interest to just purchase one and use that this season.

Does that seem like it's too cheap or something?
haven't really looked, but you often find adverts on gumtree that are just scams.

but it has been know for people to rip the pics and descriptions from ebay and ask you to send a deposit or something.

i wouldn't feel comfy about buying a vehicle in another country like that.

Ah that's not good.

I should probably buy off an enthusiast from this site then, just haven't seen the right one pop up in the for sale section yet.

You guys are a great help!

Everything is relative I guess - by US standards they may seem cheap but most of us over here are amazed at how much they're making. Better be quick if you want one - the age you need to buy are getting rarer as the newer ones are going up in value. Provided you're genuine I'm sure someone from here would be happy to go view one on your behalf if it were nearby - I'd be happy to. Whereabouts in the states are you?

That would be beyond helpful, and I could toss some money if need be.
I'm located in North Carolina.

Considering you probably have way more knowledge of what the going rate is for a Defender that I can import, what would you say I can pick a decent running one up for?

1990 and older..

Thanks!

At the moment it's impossible to put a value on one.............. but you have the added problem of needing an original one - most have been converted by now [of course you could arrange to have it de-converted over here 1st but getting expensive] plus do you want an old school 2.5?
Anyway, keep an eye on this one - not perfect by any means - but original

1989 started the 200 TDI, though, right?

That auction still has two days left, Curious to see how high it sells for..

It would be a lot easier if someone on here, had one for sale. Much easier to work with someone, VS an Ebay auction when I'm so far away.
