hi all, started looking at discoverys over defenders, will be between 2002 2004 going off what there prices are,,, one thing ive never owned is an auto and ive always been a bit warry of them for some reason, but because there are so many autos i dont want it to put me off buying a really good one on that basis, whats your feelings on the auto discovery box from these years, as apposed to manual... and is there one to avoid either way....?

disco 2 known for rot on their chassis, now diesel auto is **** in my opinion, others will say otherwise.
aaaahhh that might explain why the three ive looked at have all been black waxoiled underneath,, put me off because i couldnt see the chassis to be honest,, nice one fanatic,, and that the feeling i had about a diesel auto as well....
yes i know it protects them, it also covers a multitude of sins, like you say though scraping it off in random places and checking with a hammer is the way to go,, it also looked very recently applied on the two i looked at today, not like it had been on for years....
aahhh right.. see these are the things i need to know...

depends what you want vehicle for ,but td5 auto has many advantages and once past 50mph is the same as manual anyhow,id try both

Work very hard ? my diesel auto is **** easy to drive and pretty good on fuel too, great off road as always drive to the wheels too, and you can use it as a manual if you want to without the need for a clutch, which you never have to replace in an auto !"

If you dont do a lot of motorway or town driving the auto can get a bit annoying due to spending a lot of time revving due to traffic travelling just below tcl speed. In my 90 this is about 52mph due to bigger wheels than disco . The auto gets rid of the lack of torque at low revs of the turbo engines , and once in tcl is quite relaxing/quiet . JMHO
I had a td5 auto and hated it, as Wiltshire man said I was constantly thinking, come on change up you bastard,
I felt if I was driving a manual I would not have had to drive it as hard to get it into a higher, less revy, more economical gear.
I only had it 2 months and got shot, I would not have another auto landy,ever.
Obviously just my thought on it.

back to chassis on discovery 2, why are these prone to rust and not a defender at the same age,, are they both not made in the same place / factory with the same metal....?

They are no more prone to rust than any other LR chassis !.
You must take into account what many of these Discoverys will have spent most of thier lives doing, whish is lots of motorway miles.
If you look at enough of them, you will soon see that the worst of any chassis corrosion is around the rear end, this is simply due to the fact this is the end of the vehicle that gets all the salty spray kicked up when winter driving.
If you wash the chassis down regularly, it is possible to prevent all but minor surface rust on these cars.
And to add.
Its highly unlikely that someone would have gone to expense of waxoiling thier chassis just cover up rot. I would see the fact that a car has been waxoiled as a GOOD thing. As has been already said, just scrape it back in a few places, ( anywhere round the fuel filter housing ), and see how the metal looks.
Manual vs auto ?.
I have a manual, only because I,m a " manual man ". I get a little better mpg. I can see the attraction of an auto, as town driving can be a bit tiresome in the manual.
I have seen that the auto seems to be very good off road, offering a lot more controll when tackling obstacles.
