I recently broke down with engine problems and discovered that a push rod had snapped; this was replaced on the road to get me home. After the replacement I began to drive the vehicle home for further inspection. It ran fine for a mile or two then lost all power, as if the fuel was not getting to the engine. I eventually got towed home by the AA.
Later I found it was a problem with the fuel injection pump. I undone the fuel pipes to the injectors and turned the engine. The fuel pumped out of the pipes in sequence, so I suspected the timing belt had moved. After taking off the timing cover I found the timing belt seriously worn, and fragments of plastic that used to be part of one of a tensioner. I locking the flywheel at TDC I tried to place a locking pin in the injection pump sprocket. The pin in the pump sprocket would not go in, it was misaligned. The camshaft timing marks were also misaligned. The timing belt had no tension at all and has basically fallen off. I have now aligned the pump sprocket and locked it with a timing pin. The crankshaft is locked at TDC but the camshaft sprocket is out of line. I need to know how to realign the camshaft sprocket before fitting a new timing belt. I have also replaced the both tensioners and the crankshaft sprocket with a new self aligning sprocket. I am aware of the injection pump alignment problem with early 300tdi engines, and am guessing this is the cause of the worn timing belt.
I just need to get the camshaft sprocket aligned to fit a new belt, without damaging any of the pushrods and tappets. Any help would be most welcome. Thanks

putting sided crank pulley should fix problem ,belt needs to be steered by driver pully, adjust cam with 15mm socket ,you may need to turn crank a little if cams a long way out,its not uncommon for the sided tensioner to wear edge of belt to failure ,check all push rods are straight

Thanks James, have fitted sided crankshaft gear. Will have a go at moving the camshaft sprocket, didn't want to damage any of the pushrods etc..
