Driving home from holiday yesterday my 300Tdi discovery suddenly decided to overheat and I'm wondering if anyone has any Ideas as to what the problem may be. Here's what happened. Driving at 70 towing small unbraked trailer noticed slight loss of power and higher than normal fuel consumption. Noticed slight blue haze from rear of car followed by the temperature guage shooting up into the red. Pulled up on sliproad and there was much steam and very hot engine! any attempts to fill water resulted in a fountain of hot water straight back out again. There is also now a lack of oil. I noticed that the reas of the vehicle and the trailer ar covered in a light film of oil. Can anyone help.

If you'd asked this in the disco section someone might have said;

"It sounds like it might be your head gasket has gone. quite badly actually, across the water jacket, which would mean your trying to burn the coolant, resulting in less coolant meaning overheating and steam in the eggsauce, and accross an oil gallery, meaning that you're burning the engine oil, causing a drop in oil level, blue smoke from the eggsauce, and the oil around the back of your vehicle."

when replacing the head gasket also look carefully to the head itself. It may be damaged. I had the same problem once . regards.
