Can anybody tell me what's involved in transferring the engine and a gearbox from a disc tdi to a defender. I assume that the gearbox set up is slightly different and therefore better for cursing at higher speeds?
is this right?

thanks

If it's not a 300tdi defender you'll need to change the engine mounts as they changed em on the 300tdi. you'll have to change the exhaust, or buy a steve parker conversion as the turbo on a disco is in a different place to the defender. I'm sure if you google this you'll some up with loads of blogs and photobucket sites where people have done this and photo'd each stage.

you dont need the steve parker downpipe for a disco 300tdi, but you do for a disco 200tdi.

the 200 will bolt onto the existing engine mounts whereas the 300 wont.

one problem that you will have is the gearbox, the sticks are in a different position on a Disco compared to a Deepender (high/low is in front of gearstick, tother way round in 90). Why not use your existing LT77 gearbox and put the Disco tranny box on it to make use of the higher gearing?

i have same issue anyone done a mod to the seatbox and took pictures i am stuck ,i have a million ideas in my head but would like to see one done would be apreciated as i have the tdci dash and heater etc so couldnt use defender box ,was even thinking about using some kind of remote setup from a sprinter or something any ideas would be good

You may get confusing advice as there are two different methods of fitting a 300tdi into a 90/110.
Firstly the 300tdi engine and its ancillaries are the same for the Defender and the Discovery and Land Rover fitted them in the same position relative to the front axle on both models. (The front of a Defender chassis is virtually identical to a tdi Discovery.)
Assuming that your Land Rover is an early 4cylinder model you will need to weld on new engine mounts, the position of these mounts is dictated by the gearbox that you use.
If you use the Discovery R380 'box then you need to copy the Discovery engine mounts exactly, this will put your 300tdi engine where Land Rover put their 300tdi. The benefit of this is that you can use all standard 300tdi radiator/intercooler/oil cooler/PAS pipes and a standard 300tdi exhaust pipe.
You will also need the front prop off the 300tdi Discovery and the Discovery gearbox crossmember. Your transfer box will now be 2 inches further forward, so you will need to modify the front of the seat box and source a Defender 300tdi rear prop. As others have said, the Discovery gear lever will want to come up around the front of the centre seat.
If you retain the LT77 gear box, the 300tdi engine sits exactly where the old 4-cyl engine was and requires modified engine mounts as the engine is 6 inches further back than where Land Rover fitted their 300tdi's. This also means that you have to extend the radiator/inter-cooler/oil cooler/PAS pipes and a chop about a 300tdi exhaust pipe. You don't however need to mess with prop-shafts or the seat box. Neither do you need to replace the gearbox cross-member.
Whichever option you take, fitting the Discovery transfer box will give you Discovery gearing, not the R380 main box.

Have a look at this guy's site, loads of good info. http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/tdi300.htm

A lot of information on here, some good, some bad.
I've done both conversions, 200 disco engine and box twice and 300 engine and box once.
The 300 tdi went in with the R380 without altering any propshafts, the gearbox mounts were in the same place and the engine mounts were about four inches further forward, I made steel plates to carry the engine, one end bolted to chassis mount and the other end to the engine mount so I didn't have move the chassis mounts. One problem was that the exhaust pipe had to be modified as it fouled the engine mounting.
The 200 with R380 was much easier, heavy plates made to match engine mounts up, gearbox mounts lined up, propshafts lined up, bit tight on seat box but trimmed it, Disco exhaust fitted as did all pipework, gearlever came up on the leading edge of the seat box.
The engine mounts, (made from the old disco mounts) are still good after four years without problems
Exhaust downpipe will be a pain on 300 but other than that it's plain sailing

ive got everything in up and running the lot the only issue i have is the gearstick which you say is on the edge of the seat box i cannot put the cover over the gearstick to stop water going into the gearbox so i will have to chop the seatbox to get the stick in to work properly as i have the new dash i had to use the disco box ,just not sure how to tackle getting the stick in nice and neat i currently have a bit of re bar welded onto an extender plate and bolted down the center of the shopped down gearstick bit that goes into the box just so i am able to moove it about for now as dont have cover on yet my heads battered with which way to go dont want to kill the totally mint seatbox but its looking like am going to have to do it.

Syncro gearboxes do a conversion kit to move R380 Disco gearlever to Defender position, well worth doing, I'm going to convert mine

You'll have to either straighten the lever as it comes out of the box somehow or chop the seatbox
I fitted Disco handbrake as well

With Defender position gearstick it would be possible to bend a gearstick so that it came to the side to miss transfer lever and back to miss dash then up to your hand, anything's possible, I bent a steel rod to weld to my Disco stick so as it was tall and comfy for me

ive sorted it ive chopped the seat box made a support plate and used an old bedford cf gearstick welded onto the stud of the disco gearbox lever as it goes into the box and it looks rather good lots of pics to come for anyone else wondering what to do if they are in the same position as me but ive now sort of sorted it out lol note sort of lol its getting there
