I'd have thought so .. I put my 300tdi Disco axles, front and rear, on my 1989 90 that originally had rear drums!

I also used the Disco drop arm and HD steering bars, steering box and sundry other minor parts. On the front axle the brake lines to the caliper might need a plate making up, or existing modifying. Disco's run in front, Defender/90 run behind the caliper (or other way round!). ;)

Thanks Paul - do you know of anywhere were i can get information on how to diagnose the problem with the front axle - jacked it up and both wheels move freely without moving the prop (ive removed the prop)

cheers

If you can move both wheels and the drive flange on the diff doesn't move something is up with either the diff or the driveshafts. You could drain the oil out of the diff and look for metal. I'd want to remove the driveshafts too, to see what they are like. If it's the diff, you might be able to just swap one from a disco in, save a lot of spannerwork.

If you go for the Disco axle I think you'll find that it may have thicker radius arms (and axle brackets to suit), so check what your Defender has first. And looking at the slight play in that CV joint, I think it may be cheaper to fit another axle. (I'm just finishing a full refurb of two and would guess at over £500 on each).

ive checked both sides now and the drivers side is ok, the passenger side swivel is ok, i will refill this though.
It seems that the reason for the failure is that the swivel is pitted and lost all the grease, so what i think i need is a CV joint and the swivel kit

the old inner part of the CV joint is still attached to the half shaft, should i be able to pull this off - or is there another method of removing it?

thanks for all the help so far

Sorry for laughing a little ;) but yeah, a bust CV is a good way to stop things working .. ;)

Yeah, the broken CV should just hammer off, over the round pin that sits in a groove.

got to the end of the repair, now it seems like the other radius need a new seal, but as i now know the ball ache its all been i'll just undo the swivel and hope for the best
