Hi all

My 1998 Auto gearbox, has started revving hard between 2nd & 3rd gear, and jumps between gears, all other gears work fine.

Anyone know what the peoblem could be, or is it a matter of getting a new gearbox?

If this is the case, does anyone know where you can pick up a cheap gearbox

Cheers in advance

Have you checked the autobox oil level recently - (do it with the engine running) - if not that's the first thing to do.

engine running box in neutral use dipstick orange knob drivers side rear of engine bay, check several times as oil smears uo stick when pulled through tube

New gearbox and then "where you can pick up a cheap gearbox"

So what do you want? Land Rover new, Ashcroft's rebuilt and as good as new, or a second hand one.

As James said, the only thing I would add is that when you have started the engine, cycle through each lever position in turn, then back to N or P. Then use the dipstick to check the level. Incidently between the lower and upper marks on the stick is only 0.25ltr of oil.

thanks guys, been a big help.

I have checked the level, and it seems that there is way to much fluid.

Could this be a cause of the gearbox having problems?

normally too much in it cause its got problems and someones topped it up thinking thats the problem !

i have a good 62000 mile one with torque converter for £150 as iam stripping my un finished offroader

i payed a lot for the box off a well known breaker and tryed the box before hand so i know its a good one

my numbers 07973539352 if your intrested, iam in notts

You need to get the excess oil out. Bear in mind that bottom to top mark is only 0.25ltr. So you won't need to remove much oil to drop the level.
