Great work, again, you'll lose a few pounds working in that heat ! That journal with the plastigauge on it looks to have insufficient oil clearance 🤣🤣🤣, I remember in my motorbike days it being a PITA,all the best.

Hi mate yes spot on that was my first attempt three of them come out at bottom tolerance and one below in the end, going to get machine shop advice before continuing checked bearing part numbers fine all marked std, crank and block are both discovery 3, little perplexing at the moment. Maybe this is the reason I could hear a whirring sound, never mind it's all learning should end up with the answer? Yes was hot too much was dripping on motor Lol

After banging my head on the bench last night after work, can also reccomend jamaican dragon stout, came up with a plan refit original mains I marked position and location on removal, cleaned everything and re installed low and behold spot on 0.038 (see pic) going to refit kings just to double check but I do seem to remember a German fella mentioned this, new kings are for 2.7 and marked standard

Great to see you’ve made some progress mate , alas above my pay grade as never done them

Hopefully the results aren’t being diluted from the sweat coming off ur brow with the very hot days 🤣🤣

Fingers crossed the rest goes all to plan

As a side note I see the guys got there RRS 5.0 back up and running with a second hand engine, sounded gorgeous

All the best my friend and massive thks as always

Hi yes worked late into night had a nap in the heat of the day Lol re-fitted original bearings in original position and orientation and plastigauged all came out 0.038 or very close all within specification of between 0.030-0.054, then refitting new kings mb4276sv again marked for position I get following results
One 0.022 two 0.028 three 0.025 four 0.025 done multiple times with same results, perplexing no worries will get to the bottom of it, machine shop probably tomorrow will take crank and shells, solutions 0.010 undersized would bring to specification, should know tomorrow when I get them to micrometer the shells which are the only variable in this conundrum considering fia bm1013-standard pic of old shell trying to identify brand any ideas?

@gstuart Sorry mate reference salvage uk yes sounds gorgeous, go on get one you first but don't wait too long Lol, great mechanic too did a really good job, out in the yard too, some extremely difficult bolts to get to but nothing's impossible go on you know you want one all the best

Manage to possibly resolve issues well at least I think so mains caps in picture old shells fit almost flush 0.28 protrusion when flush at other side, new king bearing protruding 0.85 but when I fit in 306dt mains cap same 0.20ish protrusion, seems german fella may be correct, going to go to Searles tomorrow make sure I'm not mad and to make sure I get the right ones most likely fia

Can confirm have found issues with bearings with many pointers from Lr time he is absolutely spot on king mains MB4276SV do not fit 276dt even though advertised every where as so mains housing of 2.7 internally is 74.98 and the 306dt bearing is for a housing of 75.098-009 you can only fit if you line bore to 306dt specification unfortunately have ruined the kings over crushed have ordered Fia bearings bm1013std have been assured these are correct even so on some websites 2.7 or 3.0

Better raid my piggy bank as there 30 k 🤣🤣

Plus of course in my favourite colour , think they do them up to 2014, assume the extra cost would be to change the Speedo to MPH instead of KM , seen quotes of around £1200 to change it to a TFT display

Nice to dream that’s for sure , never know maybe one day, trying to remember when they changed to 8 x speed , think that was 2014 , also heard the canbus speed changed in the later 2014-16 models , would definitely disable the keyless entry that’s for sure , along with a ghost system

Indeed they done a cracking job and as u also say in the brutal heat

Nooooooo , plse step away from the keyboard 🤣🤣

Hope all goes well mate , along with the huge amount of knowledge that you’ve picked up

Massive credit to u mate , nice it’s cooled down a bit with the thunderstorms

When I win the lottery mate one red one British racing green Lol,
Building pistons and attaching rods, fitted rings, double checked tapers against original pistons top marked anyway decided to use conrods that came with the crank from the 09 as their nearly new
Fia bearings bm1013std didn't come today,
Checked out the specification on their website also available elsewhere the quoted numbers for outer housing diameter 74.98, building other four pistons tomorrow, and cleaning prepping ready for assembly

Finished assembly of pistons, rings and conrods, will give them a final clean before fitting, still waiting for bearings.
Have a few bits to sell, have at least one too many project engines, so going to offer for sale have some 276dt parts, crank has been checked and polished, block needs hone or rebore, has not been checked bore wise, but no scoring, mains housing in good order, pistons and rods(set with loose rods at side) and pair of heads, all parts belong to the same motor also included set of new aftermarket cams will photo parts in for sale section when I get them down etc will photo on stand, but any interest let me know, also will be braking a Buckingham blue 06 tdv6 body wise anyway

Massive respect mate in doing a grand job

Wonder if it’s worth selling them on the d3 forum, but not sure how many posts u need, know u can pay for an advert which is i think is around £10.00

At least then u won’t get tyre kickers so to speak , if u do plse let me know and will of course vouch for u mate

Bet u can’t wait to get it all rebuilt and onto the next one

Thks again and keep up the awesome work

Thanks mate still have much to do and learn, will get block on a stand and take a few pics over next week or so, just waiting for shells now so can resume plastigauge, it's been quite a crankshaft learning curve this week my brain is still hurting Lol will pm you at some point if that's ok have another visit to machine shop and some plastigage to do first, yes maybe give it a try just have to pluck up courage, many thanks for your help and support all the best

As always ur so welcome and glad ive managed to help in one way or another

No probs mate , plse feel free to pm me anytime and will help all I can

Hope all goes well with the rest of the build my friend

What a day, had a lesson/lecture about shells today, lucky to spend an hour or so with machine shop today, took main caps and selection of bearings, and information available from Lr time well here goes this is where I'm at seems kings I originally fitted and questioned are in fact correct, but do indeed protrude but within specification for 276dt in fact only reccomend this bearing strongly advised against me fitting Fia. Conclusion reccomended I clean mains seats/caps with 800 Emery scotch brite not good enough Oops showed me with the micrometer shell thickness he polished the crank and checked out the block himself so assured me re-fitting shells would be ok ( I did remember to mark location and orientation) told me to re clean mains journals fit tops then crank, fitting cap on 4 as specification rotate and use my judgment he said you should know what it feels like, so will use the rotating torque to check either dry fitting with old bolts or going for it with new, obviously didn't rotate before as was plastigaugeing so did this feels nice smooth, to be honest took a me a bit of plucking up courage to ask these questions but had to know what was going on

Getting there my friend , sterling work as ever

Ref the crankshaft seal on the oil pump is that the one where u have to knock it in by 1mm plse and believe it also has to go in dry and then be left for so many hours before the engine is turned over

Just curious and hope u didn’t mind me asking

Many thks and bet u can’t wait to have another disco done and dusted

Massive shame ur not nearer as would have been brilliant to have dropped in for a cuppa and u looking over my D3 to see what u think

Yes mate exactly, going to borrow blacksmiths lathe make a couple of insert tools at some point couple of days off and then finish over next week or so, done the bit was most worried about, learned a bit, much more to go but do it in stages don't want to wear out my welcome at engineers seems to have taken me under his wing a bit spent a hour or more lecturing about cranks, has an interesting theory or two, kettle always on no one gets away with out drinking tea Lol
