Ive got a l reg disco 200tdi parked it up last night no probs came to it this morning got ignition lights but dead on the key nothing I have checked all the wires on the starter replaced the spade connector on the celanode still nothing so I put the ignition on and put a wire from the back of the spade terminal to the positive of the battery and it starts any ideas anyone cheers

Has it got an immobiliser?
Cheap fix wire it up via a spring loaded toggle switch

Any more info on this please.

Mine is doing exactly the same. I changed the starter and it fixed it for about a week, now the same??!!!

Just taken all wires off solenoide and give them a clean with no joy? When key is turned to start the car I can hear the relays click so I don't think it's an ignition problem.

I have a 1992 200tdi defender by the way with no immobiliser.

Starter again? All other electrics work? Does everything go dead when turn key or does it just click?

Somebody else was suffering this prob recently and after getting the usual replies of starter motor, solenoids, alternator/battery issue.....it turned out he had a loose battery lead...

Battery earth lead to where it bolts to the inner wing, it corrodes under the connections and you cant see it.

if you just hear a click, check that the connection on the big wire leading to the solenoid is clean and tight

at both ends

When I say say click its the relays in the fuse box that give the click (two yellow and two green below fuses). Everything works as it should bar the starter!

Im working nights now so wont be able to look till friday but keep the ideas coming and I will let you know how I get on!

Thanks.

Dont forget the disco 200 also has the fusable links on the drivers side inner wing.
You will need to open the loom to find them.

Just done a 300 tdi that had a dry joint in the imobilizer, couldn't get it to solder so cut the wires and fitted a good old cobra one instead. No idea if the 200 tdi is the same but something to check

I have a defender! Is it the same?

Don't know but if you have a test light just check for a crank signal at the starter. If there is one and it's dead try a live straight from the battery still nothing? Hit the solenoid with a hammer, it may be stuck! If you don't have a crank signal give it a live from the battery, should crank so starter ok. Test lives at ignition switch! If there's a crank signal there you need to trace the wire, keep testing along its length until the signal stops, that's where the fault is! If there's no crank signal at the switch check for a battery live to it and ignition live from it again trace and test the wire. Take to long to explain fully but the circuit is pretty simple, a test light and a logical approach you should be able to trace the fault:) plus you'll learn about basic electrics

Done all of the above and found the fault, knackered starter (or solenoid)!
When putting a live straight from battery to the spade, it just shorts. I take it all the water has just corroded it all together! I have just removed it and im waiting for a lift to get another starter.

Thats 2 starters in 2 weeks. I take it my defender dont like swimming!

Not the swimming, try drying it out...

Jet wash the mud out of the rad and most of the engine bay...

Good long run warm her up nice...

WD40 round the leccy bits...thats what WD stands for ;)

Don't forget to grease the steering joints after jetwashing anorl.

I do as he said first, usually a hammer gets em to start, if you're lucky it'll recover. Or I'd find a good local refurb place I've got one that does them for £25 to £35 he's done all sorts for me and saved me a fortune

Yeah im pretty good when it comes to cleaning things. I do spend a lot of time with WD40 and grease!! Everything is maintained pretty good but im just not very good with the starter lol!

or just take the solenoid apart, clean it and put it back other

why do more work than's required
