Hi there! Wondering if anyone has some advise/help
Got problems with my td5 auto.
When the vehicle is cold I put it into drive and seems to start of in 2nd gear as I pull away it struggles and easily gets up to speed to 30mph without changing gear.
Then after driving for 2 mins I come to a stop and it then goes into first gear and won’t shift out of first for a good 2 mins or longer holding the revs up high . Once It has warmed up a Little it seems to change gears okay but they are still delayed and don’t seem smooth and hesitant in upshifting.
I have done two gearbox oil changes with filter and new oil and topped it up with the vehicle running and in neutral.
Oil was black and burnt smell
I have done the stall test and seems to rev to about 2400rpm
No faults codes on gearbox or engine that are relevant
I have also tried in low and with manual mode and selects first fine but won’t select second gear but 3rd and 4th gear is fine .
Any help would be much appreciated many thanks

another box if oil changes didnt help, black is the clutch plates burning then they wont hold,it will also jam spools in valve block

Try a few oil changes or some transmission additive, Ashcroft’s sell some for autos, not ideal but if box is knackered anyway nothing to loose, worth a try. Iv changed my oil a few times, was dark brown but not black, Diesel engine oil black kind of thing but changes beautifully now.

Yeah thanks will give that a go tbf was going to get some different atf oil and add some additive to it and see how it goes

I have heard that the additive works, but only for a short while and after that it actually makes things worse. So if I was you, I'd keep chaning the oil with ordinary ATF and hope it flushes the sh!t through without doing any more harm. but James knows a lot more about this than many of us so I'd take his word for it, belt tightening though it may cause.

The clutches are wafer thin once they start to burn there isn't any way back..

Apart from a rebuild..

I'd do the cooler and lines too..
