I'm in the process of purchasing my first Land Rover and I think my confidence needs a little reasurance. As you guys are the experts what do you think of this deal? Discovery 2 TD5 pursuit 7 seater, 45000 miles, service history 2 owners, vehicle check clear. Now the not so good, bit scruffy in places, needs tyres soon, due a service just needs a thorough tidy. I'm paying £6000. Bought it for my wife who needs to tow her horse and horse box. A good buy? Anything I should focus on as soon as I pick it up? Lastly I was thinking about getting the underside waxoyled, sealed, do I need to or am I wasting money? Thanks for your time..:)
 
What year is it? The TD5 is nice but like all Discovery's watch for water through the roof mounted windows and sunroof's, as they are likely to fuse the electric S/Roof.

Come on guys, you must have an opinion, over 100 people have read this and only one reply? Maybe you just want me to find out for myself? :confused:
 
I would pay that money for that vehicle if it stands with no major issues & has T&T.
Waxoyl if you want...do it yourself..much cheaper as with the service.
You can get tyres cheap from alot of places now, Paddocks etc will do a deal if you're buying 4 plus...I asked for a discount & they gave me some off in the end.
On an 04 you "should" be ok for oil in the loom trouble but pull the ECU plugs off & check for residue inside.
 
Thanks Foss, I've ordered genuine LR filter kit off ebay, first job when I pick her up on Saturday. The DIY waxoyl application you recommend, is that the oily type or the black tar type of underseal? Do I need to do the inside of the panels as well? Anymore detail on the issue with the loom you mentioned? Thanks again Paul

The reason for the lack of a response is because there isn't that many Disco 2 owners on here. Most seem to favour the Disco 1 over the Disco 2.

I use the oily type over underseal.Get the tin that has the hand pump attachment...remove the old stuff/flaky paint/rust with grinder & flap disc if you can...by hand is ALOT harder. You can do the panels but I havent yet...personal choice & how much spare time you have really. Get the nozzle inside the chassis through the drain holes,do the outside & you can do the components too if you like...suspension arms, axles, brake lines etc..not your brakes though!

When you service....fill the fuel filter up with diesel & follow the workshop method for purging the air from the fuel lines. Also on the rotor filter, be careful with the bolts that hold the lid on...the threads go very easily.

Have a flick through this thread & it will elaborate a little...if you ever get a misfire/non start this is a possibility ;) not tryin to scare you!

ps as i said before you "should" be ok with the loom issue as around 04ish, LR modified the offending parts...
 
as for waxoyl, go for the oily one as foss sez. the black tarry one will trap moisture between paint and metal, creating a perfect trap to cause rust.

make sure you heat the waxoyl up first, it'll flow much easier. I stand mine in a bucket of hot water for 1/2 hr before hand. then change the water again so it's hot again and start spraying
 
Well guys, thanks for your advice. I've had a busy weekend helped a lot by all the info on this site. I picked the Disco up on Friday and paid to have it cleaned as it was an absolute tip. I bought a filter kit off ebay (genuine parts) and set to. I've changed the oil and filters the air filter and the fuel filter, no problems really being careful with the centrifugal filter bolts and struggling a bit with the main oil filter (ended up using a screwdriver in the end) but will purchase something better for next time. Two of the arch trims had been knocked off so I bought brit part replacements off ebay(good quality and fit). Other than that I've just enjoyed having a drive around.. Going forward my wife and I will be using it to tow a horse box with two horses. The only thing I've found broken so far is the air con' (not blowing cold) I'll get around to sorting that in the next few weeks. How often do you guys change the oil and filters? Thanks again..:D

1st check the clutch is engaging on the compressor.

if you're not sure why it's not working, Kwik **** are doing a no improvement, no pay deal on regassing.

you could get them to regass it. if it then works, all ok, pays your money and it's fixed. if it's something else broken, then it still wont work so there will be no improvement so you wont have to pay.

make sure you get them to measure the outlet temperature before they start, and that the vehicle is parked in the same place when they test the temperature. not unknown to leave it in the sun for 1/2 hr before starting, then leaving it in the shade of the garage to cool down before remeasuring. of course it's bloody cooler now !

Thanks again for the replies, Foss you say you change the oil and filters every 4k miles. Do I need to change the oil at 4k or are you being super careful? Another thing (and I know it's been mentioned a million times before) I'm thinkink of blanking off the EGR, what the best kit? Cheers
 
I just got d2 ,at first i missed my d1 but now i,v started to tinker and i luv it,as said check that injector lead for oil, my,n had that prob but easy to fixe.rear chasiey needed a bit of welding as well
