So I changed my ball joints at the weekend one side and I had to remove and install the shaft a couple times due to the tapers on the ball joint not allowing the knuckle to sit correctly. I can only assume I've disturbed the seal as its now leaking after a test drive.

Local land rover specialist have supplied me with an all makes 4x4 seal.

My query is the seal suitable quality and can I install the seal with a socket and extension with a small tap of a hammer?

Why not pop over to the "introduce yourself " part of the forum and do just that.

As for All Makes, I have no idea, but yes roughly you can fit a new one like that. But do make sure the extension has a socket on the end of the correct diameter.
But if you know what you are doing and are careful I'm sure you'll manage it.
 
That front diveshaft seal leak can be a real saga as it seems that the manufacturers messed up something at a moment and made them too tight, i ended up machining down the shafts after i destoyed all kind of different brand seals(Allmakes, Britpart, Corteco, OEM and genuine LR) but there are some fellas who are saying that NAK seals are OK (unfortunately i didnt know about these at that time) ... measure the seal's ID and shaft's OD with caliper and if there isn't at least 0.5mm difference dont even bother to fit the seal cos it will leak in no time

I did read your posts from way back. I can't believe this is still an issue.

It appears that they sell loads of the all makes seals on JGS all with 5 star reviews.
My local independent LR specialist JSF in Norwich supplied me an all makes seal aswell. I trust their judgement on selling good quality parts but at the same time so many people have had issues.

Have you had any trouble aligning the knuckle with the shaft? Did you ever try adding rtv? I know that's a no no for a seal.

AFAIK Allmakes sells cheap and low quality aftermarkets(mostly made in China) unless it's especially mentioned "premium brand" on it... some learned it the hard way https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/allmakes-4x4.349190/#post-4642587

i can't tell you about the knuckle-shaft alignment cos i pay my mechanic for such jobs but it's not so hard to measure the seals ID and if they are very close to 35mm they will not last... that's a verified fact

I hope my first reply didn't seem argumentative as that wasn't my intention at all!

My seal was leaking horrendously and I need the car for a weekend camping trip.

I fitted the new all makes seal tonight, ensured everything was as clean as possible and the road test went successfully with no leaks.

I did compare the new to the old and visibly they looked identical except the old one appeared worn, the cars new to me so I've no way to know if it's an original seal or not.

I see the orginal problems dates back to around 2014 and im amazed its still a problem for people!

Had to fit another seal today, the first seal i replaced grabbed the axle and tore! Just fitted a NAK one which appears larger so we shall see.
 
I posted a thread recently with exactly the same issue.
The Nak seal has survived a couple of thousand miles so far. It was a VERY tight fit to the point of damaging the new seal, sensibly we had bought a spare which I managed to fit successfully.

I think I may of read your thread. The NAK seal was harder to install than the previous however my previous one had ripped the centre. Fingers crossed for this new one.

Can't believe seal fitment is still an issue in 2024

About 5 years ago I replaced the front swivels on mine and replaced the seals at the same time. I bought FTC4822.C8 from lrdirect. I bought 3 as I thought there was a chance I would damage one on fitting, which, amazingly, I didn’t. These have been fine since. I’ve just been out rummaging around in my LR bits and have found the spare, which I have measured. The ID is as near to 36mm as makes no difference (35.94 to 35.97). The manufacturing date on the packet is 06/19.

Not sure what this means. Maybe I was just very lucky. As above, I can’t believe this is still an issue.

You can buy the correct tool on Ebay made from plastic.
I have a suitable tool, sort of, but for Nak seal I used the metal tube from an axle stand, after cutting the V shape off it. This worked well as it was long enough to go through the hole the wheel bearing would normally go.

I had just done my ball joints so the ball joint tool came with a perfect size cylinder to tap in the new seal. Pray for us the seals hold out
 
Like this BUT alot cheaper!
