Hi there, can anybody tell me if there are any beneficial claims regarding removal/blanking of my EGR. Does it improve performance/economy?, do I need to do it as I have no symptons, smoke, or rattles. But it would be nice for more oomph with loads more economy.

I blanked mine off and saw no improvement in power, still waiting on the mpg, let you know when i fill up.
 
I blanked mine off and have not seen any improvement in power when not towing. However, I now actually make it up hills while towing and I do get about 30 miles to the first half tank extra.

For the £7 it costs and the 10 min to do it, it wouln't harm.
 
my 300TDi now returns 3-4 MPG more than when it did before I removed the clogged up Cat and rotten exhaust (original system - 10 years old!) and blanked off the EGR. I'm told that tweaking the pump a little and fitting a K&N will see things improve further.
 
Well, blanked off my EGR yesterday along with front section de-cat, immediate improvement noticed 30mph and above, quieter sounding too. MPG to follow but can only hope it will improve.

Did you remove the egr completely? I have recently blanked mine off (300tdi auto import) but because I didnt have a connector for the 2 pipes that run across the egr I just blanked mine at the braided hose for now and havent noticed a difference as yet.

Still got the decat to do this week.

Nah just blanked mate, it came with a Intercooler to manifold hose and fitted that and de-cat. It's not a massive difference just seems to pull better :)

i recently completely removed my EGR valve,fitted blanking plate to manifold,and removed vacuum pipes.....don't think there's any noticeable difference.

I blanked the EGR, removed the pipe to intake and fitted the new connector from intercooler to intake. My car pulls better uphill with the van on the back as it holds top gear longer. My only problem is that I now tend to use kickdown more often as it is now more fun. This does not do the mpg much good! The mod does not appear to work so well on the later TD5s.

did naff all except keep me inlet manifold cleaner

I was told by an engineer that if the EGR is working properly then removing it or bypassing it will result in no noticeable change what so ever to performance and the fact that some people like yourselves report no improvement seems to bear that out.
 
Look at it this way what does an engine need for power, performance and trorque lots and lots of clean cold air to mix with fuel.

What does the EGR do put lots and lots of low oxygen, dirty hot air into your inlet manifold, its a no brainer its only there to please the men in suits that have never seen a green lane in belgium.

First of all we need to be realistic about what gains we expect - this mod will not turn a TD5 into a Ferrari, but it will improve it in a number of ways:

1. The best reason of all for doing this mod on any diesel is to stop dirty tar-laden air being put back into the engine; If you don't believe me look in the inlet manifold of a non-modded TDi 300 like I did a couple of weeks ago. The inlet was 50% blocked with what looked like a combination of tar and marmite - not good for any engine.

2. The engine will be breathing only pure filtered and cooled air

3. On TDi 300's that I've de-EGR'd they had all improved their low down power and mpg, without question. On TD5's that I've done they run smoother and quieter.

4. On later TD5's (post 2002 EU3 cars) the EGR valve contains a large butterfly valve which appears to impede airflow into the engine so I would say they will benefit more by having this removed as part of this mod, not less.

The differences are subtle, but there.

Now De-catting LR diesels. This mod gives improvements that are not at all subtle, they are immediately noticeable and appreciated - better engine response, better mpg.

As far as I can tell there are no downsides to either of these mods, no negative mot effects, so why folks keep asking the same questions time after time I just don't.

Just do the mods and enjoy.

Can you just indulge me on this a while, cos I am interested particularly as you seem also to be in France......would you apply your assertion on there being no issues regarding MOT also to the CT here in France? Is there not a chance it will fail on emissions with the EGR removed?

I can tell you unreservedly that there are no negative effects re the french CT and either mods - D-EGR and/or De-Cat. I have done these modifications on many vehicles before a CT and, if anything, the pollution results are improved.

Cheers David! I will do those when its warm enough out there to feel my fingers!!!!! Though I will have to look up how to do the de-cat as I hadn't heard that was possible till I saw this thread.

I tow 2.5 tonnes with my two horses in the van so extra oomph is welcome..though the power commander i fitted is brilliant, but the more the merrier!

Hi Mike, all the TD5's benefit from De-EGR irrespective of age, but only post 2001 cars have a cat in the exhaust downpipe. If yours is post 2001, the best single modification you can do is a de-cat downpipe - cost about £60 - this will give a more reponsive engine and slightly improve the mpg.

Cheers Dave. Mine is a RHD model which was on UK Y plates, so it must be a 2001, without the cat, so I will just do the EGR blanking sometime.
