Hey all,

Recently purchased a 1994 discovery 1 with the 300tdi engine.
Looking to get the timing belt changed as although previous owner said it had been done, there is no receipt so would rather get it done for piece of mind.

Had a quote back of £464 fitted from my local garage(not a landrover specialist).

Just wondered what the average cost of this is these days and if anyone can recommend anywhere in chesterfield and surrounding areas?

Thanks!

Tim

Hi,
Not a difficult job to do yourself , worthwhile shopping around for a price, also worth asking what manufacturer of timing belt and tensioners they are going to fit?

Cheers

In my opinion, thats crazy money.

Parts cost is about £65 ish for the kit with new crank pulley (ie the more comprehensive kit) and its really not going to take 10hrs @ £40 / hr to fit.

Whole job is well within DIY scope. Indeed, sadly, if it isnt, then a disco 1 is going to be a horribly expensive vehicle to keep on the road : (

I'm in the middle of replacing belt on a 300 Discovery at the moment.
Probably took me around an hour to strip down.
Ordered the parts last night
Dayco belt, gasket and genuine Idler and tensioner (already fitted with the altered crank gear) for under £50
reckon it will take another hour to refit.
Didn't drain the coolant (just removed top hose from radiator)
Came up with a dead easy way of removing the bottom pulley using an old serpentine belt but forgot to take a photo.
Will recreate the scene on rebuild for a photo.
I reckon this is well within the range of a DIY'er as there are plenty of write ups on the net, showing how to do it.

Ive just (painfully) purchased the crank locking tool for the 300tdi (not the timing tool)

I have the timing kit as it is. The timining kit can be skipped, as you can use drill shanks etc. but the puller (pending biggeee's revelation) is hard to get around having.

Anyhow, the crank locking tool just stung me for £60, and the timing kit, with the puller, can be had for about £25 delivered.

They are the only specialist tools, and its possible to get by without them.

So, the first time the belt needs doing, youre looking at £85 + whatever the belt kit costs, and some loctite for the crank nut. Say £150 all in, to be on the safe side?
You will need a fan spanner also. I, personally, wouldnt bother taking out the radiator, but some do - in which case you would need antifreeze too.

Ahh, one more thing - one of those dial torque wrenches if you want to do the tensioner with a pretense of accuracy. And, if you like the numbers, a standard torque wrench for the crank bolt when youre putting it back together again.

Im about to do the belt on my defender 300tdi, so ill keep an eye on the time i take. Ive done the job twice before, and my skill set is very limited, so it will be an indication of how long a non-professional takes. I

Does this mean that your new method could have saved me the 60 notes?

Im not sure as i want to know about it any more!

; )

Joking apart, theyre (relatively) easy enough to get off, and, previously, ive just done it up tight with a friend on the breaks, but this time i wanted to actually get the torque as specified, and i could not see a way to achieve that without the locking tool?

Is it much different to a200tdi? I did mine by drilling a hole of the correct size through the wading plug, then putting the drill bit up through said hole. Timing pump was done with a long shouldered 3/8 bolt with the threaded section cut off. No puller needed. Piece of cake but as I say, that was a 200.

Possibly a stupid question, how do you lock the crank on a Auto?

i need to do mine

Same tool, but goes into a different hole on the "bell housing" - tis on the (flat) front of the housing, closer to the near side under a plate... easy to see from underneath...

I would have to agree

Finally got the Timing belt replaced and the front end rebuilt.
Used the old Serpentine belt method to undo and also tighten the crankshaft bolt.
Don't have a torque wrench so used a 6ft Scaffy Pole to tighten the f**k out the bolt

Wrap the belt round the bottom pulley one and a half times and loop the other end over the top pulley boss.
Change the rotation of the belt to loosen the bolt.......simples.
To take the strain off the bolt just turn back a little to slacken the belt without slackening the bolt
