I had a old D1 v8 before the diesel and for some reason it sounded just like a TVR. The system was stainless and had centre and back boxes too. It was greater than 2" dia though iirc.

Bloody nice sound, it was the only reason I brought it and the only reason I kept it until I literally couldn't do anything with it any longer.

I miss my V8's

I've got a v8 on LPG.

I've been toying with sorting the exhaust properly recently.

Do NOT do what I did... removing the center silencer just makes it a lot louder without really giving you the V8 rumble. It's currently running outside and I can hear it in my office :S

Removing the rear silencer alone doesn't make a lot of difference....

Thats why you need a cherrybomb:)

Yes, you need some kind of decent centre muffler and nothing else.

A silencer has baffles, a muffler is just a straight through expansion chamber, flowmaster being the benchmark name.

Mine has hedman headers then 2.5" after that, with a 19"x5" round glasspack muffler and it sounds just like it should, bum bum bum on tickover and barks like a racer flat out, and it certainly is loud, but that was made by a proper exhaust place so I expect it should be just right!

As above though, at cost £300 it was no cheap fix.

Get a BIG cherry bomb and replace your middle box and ditch the rear.

The standard setup has the inlet in the middle of the middle box and the outlet off centre so to replace with a cherry bomb you'll need a small amount of adjustment but it should be doable.

Just make sure there's no baffles whatever you choose to fit :)

I did that, then i annoyed me so much just put centre box back on lol

I has a louder option in mind ;)

Header mufflers out the wings and done :D

You should do it like that jag on top gear india special, straight out bonnet, and when you need some silences can put a silencer on each exhaust ;) lool !

Have you seen the electronic controlled valve you can put in your exhaust, basically a volume switch, can adjust it from closed to fully open, i have been told there used on hot rods so they can run silencers and have a by pass that they can shut off when they fancy some silence ;)

Nah but with that in mind I have an idea for a manual one using an old steam engine tap valve to control flow rate into a second pipe system

Yeah sounds good, when i went to MPH motor show, clarkson had something similar to that on his v8 110, him n Hammond where having a battle of the v8 noise, and he was like i got this little level i pull here ,and all hell was released was so so so loud haha think it was a TVR v8

Sorry, got to get my anorak and soap box out here. Silencer and muffler are different words for the same thing as are header and manifold.

Silencer and manifold are the english descriptions for components and muffler and header are the american descriptions.

Same as bonnet and hood, wheel nut and lug nut, wing and fender etc...

That's one of the problems of the internet and fast and farcical movies. The bastardisation of our language due to cross pollination.

Ok ste fair play, my mistake, I assumed muffler referred to the straight through type.

Anyway, that's what I'm getting at, just the expansion type not baffled.

It was 300 plus vat iirc for manifold back, so Y pipe, middle box and back, all custom made out of a squillion small pieces from JP exhausts in Macclesfield.

This was in mild steel by the way, wouldn't have fancied the stainless price!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. You Sir, are a git! :p

Not jealous, honestly.....

Might have to get off my arse and scrounge an absorption silencer to bung in place of the straight pipe on mine....
then add a decent exhaust to the I want what Sam's Got list....

the I want what Sam's Got list....

Lol, banter :p

Those things which we speak of by the way are called exhaust cutouts, basically a Y piece after the collector which has one Y goin to the rear system and the other Y capped with a plate on wing nuts.

Get to the strip and uncap.

I was going to do this but couldn't find room in the system...

Ferrari F355s have similar. Basically 2 separate exhaust systems in 1 silencer with a vacuum operated diverter valve. Unfortunately they were ****e and used to rattle like buggery at idle and sound awful... We used to wire them open so you ended up with full noise all the time.
