I've a buzzing noise from the dash when I go over a bump and when driving on ice recently (when the TC light also came on). I suspect its an audible TC warning, but its annoying - any idea which wire I cut to disconnect it?

It's normal behaviour...the sound of ABS modulator / shuttle valves .....u can get rid of it only if u disconnect TC as to not work at all....are u sure u want to do that?
 
Wow - many thanks for this! This looks like very similar kit and at a much lower price. Are you able to recommend it as an alternative in terms of quality??

Who knows what it takes to get me able to lock my centre diff?

if u make some calculations u'll see that even with shipping included these parts are cheaper then what u can find on UK market...at least it was for me : Land Rover Discovery LT 230 Diff Lock Shifter

and u'll need this too Discovery Series II Transfer Case CDL Kit

or u can go on this one Ashcroft Transmissions - CDL Update Kit

I hope that's not an example of the actual selling item! I can't see anything to say whether or not they are refurbs or sold as they are when they remove them from the original t/box. In which case they could have 100k miles , maybe even 200k of wear and tear on them. Considering they are a quick seize item I'd like it to at least be reconditioned at that price.

That looks like a shifter from a D1. It works, but the general consensus seems to be that it is noisier than the cable operated shifter and you have to make sure you match to either auto or manual depending on what gearbox you have. In short, you'd be better off spending the extra.
 
Just to advise that I've now ordered one from Jay at TD5. I've had a chat with him and I'm assured its as good a kit as that produced by Ashcroft (I think enthusiasts can sometimes produce as good if not better quality kit than commercial manufacturers) - many thanks for the link Disco01 - saved me some £s!

Just for infor if the serial number of the transfer box starts with 41D or 42D then the kit is already in there. If not you've got to pay the extra to fit the missing bits. Mine was manufactured in 2000 and has a 41D.

I think I need to step in here and correct this statement just so that we understand we're both on the same song sheet before anybody starts banging down my door! :confused:

In your email to me Ian you asked about my product and its construction to which I gave you a fairly comprehensive and honest description. At no point did I make a comparable, reference or even mention of anybody elses product. :eek:

Whilst I appreciate your intent and am glad to have saved you some money, I would nevertheless prefer a little more accuracy in what you were told. ;)

Its on order from Ashcroft engineering (£250). I've a 41D transfer box in my Disco 2- so the diff lock mechanism is already in there - it just needs joining up with new linkage have a look at:

Stupid question, but how can you tell if your TB is a 41D:confused: I would like to fit the Diff Lock on my 2004 Disco TD5, at the moment its ****e in muddy conditions, the tyres are probably a lot to do with it!!

Rather than scurry around looking for numbers it is easier to get underneath the Disco and feel for the spigot on top of the TB casing. If it's there you have the internals, if not you haven't!

I've checked the serial number underneath on the transfer box before ordering the linkage. I must say that its now fitted and the mechanism is high quality, fit for purpose and went on like a dream.
