I have another question on this. If it's bricked, but parking brake is off. Is it safe to be loaded onto a truck if it can't be started? Is there any way I can get out out of park and into neutral? Thanks
 
Do you have cup holders below the select lever? if so, remove them and locate the red tag...pull for neutral

Thanks. I was searching as I posted that. Should look before asking the simple stuff. Is there any way to put it back into par again, or is it a one way trip?
 
You may have to hold the tag taught to stay in Neutral....which is a pain when loading single-handed....or it may temporarily remain in Neutral....either way it will go back into Park once you stop manouevering
 
Is there not a fuse you pop in to get it into N I beleive you do it on auto RR but might be wrong someone will confirm or say I'm talking garden fertaliser from the back end of horse...

Different models and different ranges have different solutions. For a while the RR had a lever at the side of the engine block, under the plastic cover....but the cable broke more often than it worked. The latest RR's have NO release mechanism unless connected to Dealership computer. Damage will be done when loading these....so feck knows why they went down this road.
From memory the D4 is as above.

Which specialist were you thinking about? The neatest I know of are Gibsons in Cumnock, and Monarch in the east end of Glasgow. I haven’t used either myself. I have used a good general garage in Paisley which is a bit closer, GMC in Greenhill Rd

It's a local one back home. I'll get there via RAC recovery. I tried the ones up here including Gibsons but they are booked solid until after we need to go back, and some into July. Seems Landrovers keep everyone busy!

just had another thought , check the earth strap on the drivers side , think it’s hidden behind the wheel arch liner

managed to find a picture of it

plus 1 ref the battery , also had the same issues ref @lynall did with exide , also went to Halfords and got a yuasa 019 ,

however on the D4 u have a smart charging system , so best to double check if u need an AGM on urs, also assume it’s is a 3.0 SDV6, just wished to make sure the correct battery is fitted , should specify in ur owners manual

fingers crossed it’s something simple , plse let us know how u get on

There’s also a single wire that runs from the alternator to the positive terminal on the battery, this wire can break but I’m under the impression the red triangle light will show up on the dashboard , also found an online picture for u as a ref just in case


have u also check ur passenger side carpets plse , are they wet and is there any water in the door channel as a big loom runs inside that channel

Thanks gstuart. Carpets are generally dry, well they are now. I have big rubber mats down so wouldn't have noticed previously.

When it happens I am getting a red triangle, but then it goes away and comes back, so it could be a a broken wire that's reconnecting / breaking. The fact that it is more frequent now means it can hopefully be pinpointed.

No indication of why sometimes it's bricked and no ignition and why sometimes it starts either - but that could indicate battery also?

Re the battery it's not struggling when starting, but I have no means of testing the load but the RAC will do that as a first step I guess. Also the alternator seems to be charging when tested, but again it's an intermittent issue but who knows. I have a feeling I will end up paying for lots of 'maybe' fixes.

Must admit I am out of my depth with this, just praying that it can be fixed and I won't be left with a bill that's more than it's worth. Annoyingly put 4 new tyres on it before this trip so extra cost if its a write off :rolleyes:
 
I also managed to get this photo of the errors read. They are all U errors but also a P0700-00. There were others read but I didn't get chance to get photos of them. Could that cause all these issues?

I'd be checking that earth strap and other wire as @gstuart mentioned, might as well while you wait for RAC. Personal opinion is thats a spurious electrical fault which won't cost the earth to diagnose at a decent indy

Thanks. Hoping so, have read a few open ended or ongoing sagas on multiple codes / intermittent issues so we will just have to see how it plays out. The guy I use is good and will take one step at a time rather than just replacing everything. When I called this morning he WhatsApp video called straight back so I could show him some of the obvious stuff that was easily accessible. He's also always busy which is a good sign. When I get it back I'm not in a rush for it as long as it's good for our next trip at the ens of the month. Not sure how I can get my camping gear in a hatchback lol

hi buddy

talking of clips/ fasteners etc I’ve managed over time to buy different types of pliers to make life a lot easier for the various clips that are fitted throughout the disco , some of the most useful pliers were the knipex type R hose clips that go around the EGR pipes and the inner wheel arch clip removal pliers

along with some terminal pin files , still amazed of the massive range of different pliers that are on the market and could spend a fortune

yeh I know I need to get out more , lol
