Hi All,

Completley new to Discovery 3. Bought one for my wife which has been running fine. Yesterday whilst out picking up some bolts for my Defender i9 had driven only about 3 miles and the engine completely died. No bangs, no rattles, just no power at all. The power steering went, and i just drifted to a halt.

When you turn it over now there is no sign of it attempting to turn over and I cant hear the starter motor trying to turn.

I have stuck my fault coide reader on it and it is not receiving ANY fault codes.

On the dash I have a park break showing and the Engine fault showing. I've had it recovered to home but before sending it off to my local garage i wanted to check it wasn't something simple that I could fix or worse case, its the timing belt.

What do I do?

Buy a running jaguar s type 2.7. Or the similar Citroen make sure running well then break for parts KEEP THE ENGINE.

Rip out dead engine and fit all the land rover ancillary to the donor.

20 minutes work will get you to the top cam belt pulleys, that should give you the answer without taking it to the garage.

@gstuart :D don't buy an engine yet ffs, as said investigate belts first and get fault codes read at home if you can

Hi mate

It does sound like the belts, or maybe an oil pump casing has let go , indeed as mentioned check the front timing belts first

Assume the op checked the belts/ oil pump cover were done when he bought the disco

Time will tell what he reports back

My thoughts exactly. Going to check belts, oil filter for metals etc. I tried to read the faultcodes but im getting nothing back. I know my reader works as I previously had an EGR fault code that i had repaired.

Not had a chance to do much on it yet as its dark by the time i get back from work. I did stick a multimeter on the battery. 11.73V. A lot on the low side. Ive stuck it on charge.I was wondering if a jump from my defender would also have given it more oomphf to start? If the battery dosent come up to charge I will change that out first.

11.73v is fooked and then some
Its quite common on D3 for battery to take out alternator and vice versa

If you replace the alt only fit a Denso unit as all the cother copy ones seem to give trouble, if you have a read on the Disco3/4 forum theres loads of info on it.
Dont fot the Exide 017te battery as they arent much cop (mine lasted 18 mths), the Yuasa 019 from Halfords are pretty good, especially if you have a trade card.

Agreed I wouldn’t buy an exide again , good the yuasa is still going well :D

Well it wasn't the battery. Just fitted a new Yusha HSB019 Silver from Halfrauds. 5 year guarantee so i suppose that covers that bit.Now getting the EGR fault code P0405 and P0405 P. There is a mid pitched whine when i try and start but nothing else. Time for the garage me thinks

Just heard back from my garage. Its a land rover shop. TDV6 engine is Kaput. Unfortunately he doesn't do engine swaps. Going to use London Engines. Anyone had good or bad experiences with them?

Hi

Sorry to hear that , PLEASE , don’t use London engines , heard terrible things

For a recon engine ur looking at 5k , many use an engine out of a Jag S type , some buying the whole vehicle in order they can hear it run then break the car after to recoup come money

Everything has to be swapped over on the engine

Some engine are for sale on this D3 forum , advising etc when one comes up

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/

Did they tell u why it failed, was it the oil pump cover that went , seeing urs is a 2007

Good luck and plse let us know how things go
