Good afternoon everyone, I hope your weekends are going better than mine.

I drove my 2001 disco TD5 auto 10 miles to the inlaws. Went to drive home after a couple of hours and she is running very rough indeed, juddering at idle and when driving. She is also suffering from a serious loss of power, we're talking 10mph max up hill and 40-50mph max on level ground. She is due a service which I was planning to do next week but this seems to be a very extreme way of telling me it's needed lol. There does seem to be a slight noise under acceleration which I can only describe as the turbo hiccupping.

Any suggestions welcome, as I use her for work and need to get her back to full health ASAP.

Try a search and you will find
seized waste gates and injector seals and in tank pumps are common
 
Thank s for your suggestion. I've just checked the wastegate and all appears well there but I have noticed a distinct lack in noise from the pump when I turn the ignition on. It would appear that the auto prime is not function. Could this cause all of the above symptoms? If so does it mean I need a new pump?

Your TD5 will show these syptoms when the fuel pump has failed or possible fuel line/filter blocked or restricted, it has a default mode limp home which sounds as if it has kicked in, check this out and clear the fault code and it should be fine..

fuel pump failing doesnt set any codes off, but unless there is 4 bar fuel pressure through out rev range it will run rough
 
Ok then so it's a new fuel pump then! A simple case of taking up the access panel in the boot floor and popping in a new pump???? I'm hoping to do this myself on Monday as soon as I can get a replacement pump £££££££ lol! Will I need to get any fault codes cleared??

u can make sure if the fueling untill the rail is good or not ... find a garage where they are up to measure the pressure after the FPR ...if u have constant 4 bar there u dont have to spend big money for the pump... if u have an old FPR u can improvise a gauge for yourself... see this,http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f50/device-measure-td5-fuel-pressure-125166.html it's not expensive and it's a very usefull enhancement

are u certain the problem is not electric?... i mean for test swap relays R1(fuel pump) with R3(headlamp wash) and make sure F10(30 A) makes good contact cos it used to loosen(they're all in engine bay fusebox)
 
The Injector wiring is ok?

Did you check the red plug on your ECU for oil?

Could also cause missfire and lack of power.
 
I have noticed a distinct lack of sound coming from the fuel pump. I used to be able hear it pumping now there is no sound at all. So I'm hoping that I've identified the problem. I'll try swapping relays and fuses around to see if that's the problem.

I would have suggested the fuel pump first off with the symptoms you describe, but the fact that you cant hear the pump says it all.

Before you order a new pump though, just check you have power at the connector to the pump, as it MIGHT be a wiring fault.

Out of interest, how many miles are you on ?.

It's on 108k miles. So it's probably due a new pump lol. When I turn the ignition on I can hear a click coming from the rear end, I'm thinking it is power going to the pump but I could be jumping to conclusions.

All sorted!! Fuel pump was knackered. £248 later the disco back to normal and I even treated her to a full fluid change for good measure.

A Big thanks for everybody's comments and suggestions. Very helpful indeed!
 
I have a 2004 TD5 and today developed the very same problem!!! Please let me know how you got on with this, did you replace the pump in the end?

Before i took it to the garage for the clutch I noticed that she was juddering at 60/70mph and now driving home this week it was juddering at 30/40mph with great loss of power..

Any ideas-suggestions
