my disco td5 belt was hanging by a thread 3ribs missing so I changed it chewed it right through two ribs was wrong size so got one off my breaker disco fitted perfectly ran perfect for a week or two opened bonnet belt had started to chew again I cleaned the ribs of rust etc where do I look next?

Sounds like one of your pulleys is running out of line or you might have a problem with the tensioner

99 percent of the time its the tensioner, a torch and decent eyeballs will see its running out of line as the bush it pivots on will have worn allowing the pulley/arm to cock over slightly.
I literally do hundreds of hgv ones at work and its always the tensioner, all the auto tensioners are ****e no matter who makes them.

Me 3 for tensioner. I had the very same issue. It's easier to see from underneath drivers side, bonnet open to let some daylight in and jobs a good un......

There not bad to do.

I havent done a td5 one in an age, but they are all normally held on with just one central bolt, access is normally the issue, but as youve already changed the belt yourself then the tensioner will be a doddle.
Iirc last time I did one it was quite cheap, but this would be about 10 yrs ago

Is it easy job to change it ?

On the Td5 it is fairly easy, but it does involve removing the viscous fan to give yourself some working space, and that's best done with the proper spanners.
  • Remove the acoustic cover and the fan guard
  • Remove the viscous fan
  • Use a spanner to release the tension on the aux drive belt tensioner and remove the belt.
  • Remove and discard the whole tensioner assembly. Just one bolt.
Replacement tensioner is about 25 quid.
Altogether, about an hour work.

Hi Brian, Is the retaining bolt normal right hand thread? I thought I'd read somewhere it was Left Hand. Just checking for our info.
Cheers,
Griff

The threads, AFAIK are a standard right hand thread for both the viscous fan and the tensioner mounting bolt. The centre bolt in the tensioner pulley wheel is left hand fred.

Yes I ment the tensioner mounting bolt. Found where I'd seen it - RAVE Section70.50.19 item 4 (page 1087) says LHT must be missprint.

It must be. The tensioner assembly is mounted to the engine on a square peg, so there's no need to use anything but a standard thread. The rotation direction of the tensioner pulley dictates that a LHT must be used.
