While doing my transfer box oil change today I decided while I was on the floor to lub oil points around the transfer box, particularly the high/low linkage as I very rarely use it. Having done this I had a gander at the diff lock stub which is present but not connected for driver operation. I gave it a clean and grease and made sure it was free to operate.
Having done thus I also decided ( I really should stay in the fckin house) to check that the diff lock indication on the dash was working.... well bugger me, it isnt, and I also noticed that no diff lock indication light comes up when I first turn on the ignition. Im assuming that the switch may be goosed and not just the dash light as I was expecting bing bongs and TC/HDC light etc to come up with diff lock engaged but basically nothing is happening.
Ive been looking at the modification threads on here to try and shed light but found njothing helpful and wondered if any of my buddies on here could educate me. Ive got two main points to consider:
1. Have I possibly turned the spindle joby the wrong way, this has only just occurred to me having been looking at the modifying cable/ lever assemblies. It seems that to engage diff lock you push selector in car to left. It appears this in turn would pull the inner cable in, thus turning the diff lock spigot anti-clockwise when viewed from above. Am I right about this? (I actually turned it clockwise when attempting to test, possibly explaining why the switch wouldnt be activated). JUST EDITING THIS BIT AS I VIEWED THE SUPERB DISCO 2 WEBSITE AND IT APPEARS THAT BY MOVING THE SELECTOR LEVER TO THE LEFT, THE INNER CABLE IS PUSHED OUT THUS TURNING THE CDL SPIGOT CLOCKWISE.....back to theory that my switch may be goosed.
2. I decided to stop ****ing about at dinner time and put it back to normal.......or did I???. Now im 99.9% sure that before I touched the spigot it was positioned with the two flats of thespindle basically parallel with the sides of the car. Having reversed it out the garage, everything felt normal, nothing to suggest any abnormal loads on transmission but you know that way you give yerself "the fear".
Im sure theres someone out there who has done difflock mod and may remember some of this. I should say, I have no intention of doing diff lock mod but have heard of how a broken half shaft can stop you dead so I am toying with the idea of fitting a wee handle on to the spigot so that in times of need I have a get out. Thoughts please?
