gearbox fault, two alternating green flashing lights on the dash appear sometimes, telling me i have a transmission fault, when they flash I can only get 3rd and reverse, can anyone share any info on this?

When those lights flash, the car will go into "limp home" mode, which means 3rd gear and reduced engine power.
So, why did the lights start flashing:

1. Car battery starting to get weak;

2. XYZ switch faulty;

aha! my mate had this on his 02 td5. bad connection at gearbox ecu, possibly caused by oil ingress via capilliary action through wiring loom,take it off,check it out,OR call the aa and get them to plug it in for free ! there is also a common fault , on certain chassis numbers with bad ecu joints, but again i cant remember the chassis numbers,hope this helps!
 
It's the gearbox selector switch on the side of the gearbox. Turns the mechanical movement into electrical signals to feed the autobox ECU.
Unless it has become fouled up by the air con drain above it.:doh:

The you don't just get any old lights, you get flashing M & S lights.:cool:
