Hey all

Our 3.9 Discovery V8 EFI '96, had some 'issues' starting for the last 2 weeks following a dizzy cap/rotor arm replacement. Finally got it going this afternoon after trawling forums and manuals and testing everything in the ignition system we could find, plus extracting and fixing the immobiliser spider. Turns out that our distributor/plug rotation does not exactly match the diagram in the RAVE manual... (but we do now know how to find TDC)

Our helpful mechanic had emptied the best part of half a can of Easy Start into it last week whilst it was cranked repeatedly. When it finally caught this afternoon it fired 2, inch-long pieces of blackened honeycomb stuff about 2 metres across the drive. We're thinking that they should live in the exhaust maybe?

So, now it runs so we took it out for a quick test. Pretty soon it developed a pulsing mis-fire, crappy power and a nasty judder under load, identical on LPG and petrol. Would/could this be directly caused by the cat(s) being knackered? Equally, the lambda sensors look about 200 years old and are covered in crap and oil and stuff. Ought we replace both or neither and look elsewhere for the misfire maybe?

Additionally; my OH has occasionally noticed the coil arcing onto the body - he has resoldered & insulated the connection from the -ve connector, but this doesn't seem to have made a difference - noticed it again once it was up and running today.

Any help most appreciated.

Amy.

if the coil is arcing i would look to find the reason current cant get to plug ,pictures in rave are generic not necessarily accurate ,change cats or remove before going much further

Thank you :)

We'll get to work (tomorrow now!) - thinking of playing it safe and replacing rather than removing. I presume that only the HT lead, amplifier or coil itself could restrict the spark to dist...? We'll get checking them and report back.
