Need a bit of advice.

Currently have a defender 90 truck cab. Used for shooting and the odd pay and play day. With only two seats it's not practical now kids have come along, the wife is pushing me to buy something a little bigger (and children safe).

I will use the vehicle for pay and play days and general off roading. I will be fitting a winch bumper and winch, good 80\20 mud tyres, and expedition roof rack. However, when I need to use it to cart the family around I can do that in "reasonably comftably". I may consider getting a spare set of wheels and tyres to swap when I'm going on pay and paly days.

I've owned loads of defender, but never a discovery or range rover. Budget is pretty low about £3,500. Milage is very low, about 1,500 miles per year, so V8's are not out of the question.

Any advise?
Anything to avoid?

discovery, for the budget i dont know which rangie you could get but im sure it would have even more electrical problems than a disco 2, although a full roofrack for a disco is harder to get and more expensive than the rangie, also the disco is more comfortable for rear passengers who have more room

Hi JB, go for a Disco TDi 300 manual. Find a good one, pay no more than £2000 for a 1998 one and you'll have money left over for mods. They have no electronics or air suspension to give you grief.

De-Catt and De-EGR will only cost about £50 in total and makes a big difference to throttle response and engine efficiency in general.

You should expect to get 30+mpg from a TDi 300 manual.
 
i would go disco route as it is more adaptable than range rover. but if a disco 2 it will be very high milage i would look for a late disco 1 es spec there are still some good ones out there
 
You will only get five seats with a RR and five or seven with a disco.
More comfort in a RR but then it's always been 'top of the range' of the LR's products, all RR's have self-leveling suspension, but with the mods you thinking of, comfort may be lower down on the list, most RR's will be auto and petrol although some of the last RRC's had a tdi 300 engine and the P38's had an option of BMW diesel engine.

Just go and drive them all :)
 
Hi go for the disco v8i cheaper on repairs very comfy to drive and good off road, this is mine its a 1997 v8i xs manual

Of the two, the Discovery would seem to be the workhorse so should be the logical choice, although some Rangies like the P38 seem to be very cheap for their year and with a (undeserved?) reputation for problems.

I prefer the V8 engines myself, and a Rangie without the V8 is just not the same car IMO.

As for ingine A V8 sounds dam nice but as my middle name is arkwright I have a doosel my self lololol and it was gr8 till transfer box packed up on thursday :D
but onced I got the new tranny in today I will be off up into them dare hills again with doris and 4 kidz :D :D :D
 
have you tried one of the specialist insurer's like adrain flux cos it should cost much more than a defender or unbolt the two back seats and tell um its only a 5 seater ;)
 
do yourself a favour mate ask yourself why you want to buy a car with elec operated diff locks, air suspension etc then modify it to use off road? my honest opinion is to find the best 300tdi discovery you can afford as these have no electronc gremlins, return 30-35mpg and will suit both your purposes. obviously the range rovers come with more toys but aren't really a serious off-road toy without removing most off the refinements which just makes them a pretend disco anyway!
and yes my 300tdi is on the for sale post but that aint why i recomend the 300tdi disco mine will sell in a crack espescially with the weather we're having at the minute like!!

Thanks guys for the top advice. The arguments put forward in this posts clearly favour the Discovery. For what i want to use it for does seem like the best option.
