Oh Aaaagh. I've just been fitting a new tailgate latch to my 2001 Disco 2 because the actuator for the pop-up thingy from the central locking wasn't working and I was doing the climbing over the back seats act mentioned in another thread. Everything was going smoothly. New latch in place. Checked the central locking worked. Checked the outside handle was attached to the latch. All good.

So I carefully close the door, which closed with a bit roughly, and tried to open it using the outside handle. Door won't open.

Blip the central locking, up comes the tab. Door still won't open.

Clamber inside and try the inside door handle. No Joy. And (because I have the door trim off) tried the other levers on the latch from inside the car. Still nothing.

So whats gone wrong? I half suspect the latch isn't quite aligned right but there's no play or rattling, it's firmly closed. The child lock could well be on, it certainly was at one stage when I was fitting the latch but, I may have flipped it off before closing the door.

But how do I get the dratted door open to diagnose? Looking at other posts, it doesn't feel like levering the LR badge off and squirting WD40 around will fix this. And I know that the outside handle's good. Any other ideas? Preferably ones that don't involve trashing the brand new latch.

Two reasons I know of why the door won't unlock from in side, child lock could be on or it's dead locked, but from the outside ? perhaps you could try going through the locking sequence again also dead locking/unlocking. Also check your electrical connection to the lock.

Thanks for the answer Discool but, please stand down on this one, I've sorted it.

Working on the assumption that the child lock was on I practised moving the levers on the old latch till I knew what *should* open the door. When I went through the same sequence on the latch fitted to the car and, nothing happened. So I went with my guess that the latch wasn't aligned correctly and used a wrecking bar to nudge the latch upwards & downwards and at one point the door just fell open.

Repositioned/refitted the latch a bit more carefully and it's working properly now.

Phew, phew and double Phew.

Thanks for listening :)
