Just about to buy a N,P,R or a bit newer disco but reading this site for the past few weeks frightens the Sh1t out of me, they **** all their fluid out onto the street, and suck all of the elements in through the sun roofs etc. The gearboxes blow up with spectacular gusto it seems on a regular basis, and every other bit either falls off or breaks keeping the owner in a full time occupation as a landy mechanic.

Now I know they can't be all that bad so can somebody say a few reasuring words to Put my mind at rest before I go and buy one of these reliable jap models.
 
There great I done 8k in mine since January. and avent spent a penny on it. other than diesel and oil.
 
I've had my current one for 12 months now and it has covered 33thou in that period and only costing me normal service items.
 
Ive had mine 6 months and dont regret it one bit. As Stig says normal service items. A friend of mine took his Audi A6 in and it was going to cost him £3000 to fix. Thats nearly what mine cost. If you get a well looked after example with a full service history then I don't think you will go far wrong. Someone else I know has a shogun same age as mine and he says its rubbish and wants one like mine.
 
you are a big boy now only you can decide what you are going to spend your hard earned cash on, i'm a big land rover fan and hope you go for a disco, we've bought a 51 plate Td5 disco 2, my missus had a bump in our very faithful 300 tdi disco 1 and cos it had 174,000 on he clock the miserable gits wrote her off, we heard horror stories about the Td5 and to be honest i was a little worried about how it would behave, but to its credit we have had 11,500 peaceful miles, so my guess is, if you enjoy getting your hands dirty you can buy a cheap one and spend some money on it, or search for a tidy one and pay a bit more, i bought our last 2 disco's in scotland, one of them off ebay without even viewing it! they seem to be cheaper up there! good luck with what ever you choose to buy, but you will raise more smiles and get more waves in a disco!
 
probably down to roy rodgers wiv their spurs still on fittin crap parts or neglect then, a good disco is a reliable one yer recon, cheers chaps.
 
I'm on my third, had a 200tdi, a 300tdi auto and now on a td5. The 200tdi had a bit of cash spent on it when the timing belt snapped. Less than £200 quid to rebuild it compaired with the £2000 it cost when it happened to my old mans trooper. The 300tdi, i had for about 20,000 miles and bought a battery and some shocks. Had the td5 for 4 months, done about 3,000 miles in it. It leaks in a little, it leaks out a tiny bit, and the power steering pump wines a bit. Apart from a massive amount of fuel due to my heavy foot i can honestly say that they have heardly cost me. Regular services and buying with a service history is the key in my oppinion.
 
Ive owned my TDI 300 (P96) now for only 5 weeks and wouldnt part with it, as the guys say get a good one and take someone with you, i made the mistake of buying from a dealer with a few things wrong and paid toooooo much ! my misake, but to the dealers credit (a local landy dealer) he put things right with no quibble and a smile back on my face,

Just finished my first bit of off-roading tonight and it was bloody great

In my humble opinion a top vehicle goes anywhere and other drivers tend to get out of your way best 4x4 out there forget the jap stuff I test drove a few before i bought mine, get a decent TDI 300

I saw a sign in the back window of a TDI 300 which read...
`dont follow me in your shogun, you wont make it !`

mines been brilliant i have a 200tdi with 199,950 on the clock and it loves it starts up doesnt smoke i have it on a 1990 plate so 3 doors and no sunroof, no leaks bangs or clunks just prime time for putting modifications on it
 
Any car you ever buy is going to be the worst investment you can make:eek:

Problem with all these car forums is that we all rant and rave when we have problems but just "Enjoy silently" when all's well:)

I personaly think after 20 years non Land Rover and nearly a year with one that I'm going mad cos I actualy enjoy repairing the bloody thing:rolleyes:Best thing that I've ever had!

All cars are bastooding things,Land Rovers are easy to work on and bits are cheap!

My old girls awaiting a new gearbox from Blighty (£500) the last Audi box I had go on me cost £1500!!!!

Work it out yourself!

Ok mines a 90 not a Disco, but they're pretty much the same under the skin. Drove MR2's before buying a proper car... bits for Land Rovers are ridiculously cheap by comparison. Examples... entire (pattern) exhaust for my 90: circa £100. Pattern back box for my (now ex) MR2: circa £400... Brand noo caliper for the 90: £75. Recon caliper by some dodgy company in N'Hants for the MR2: £95. Complete set of discs, pads and flexi-hoses for the 90: £205. One new OEM front disc for the MR2: £200... Fook orf scare the pants off lorry drivers spot lamps for the front of the 90: £40. One headlamp filter for the MR2 £75... If you ain't got the picture yet... buy a Shogun FFS! :D

like ur point of view im with ya on that one had an integra type r before this one everything was extortionate snap a bolt u can only buy the part from honda and its gonna be at least £19 for 1 bolt
 
Wether its jap or british they all have their problems, my last 4x4 was a toyota and within 3 months of purchasing it had cost me a grand in repairs and went on over two years to need around another five hundred, i did use it off road and the exhaust falling off was probably due to that but, i then had a "never goes wrong" audi which in a year produced similar bills as the toyota with a broken clutch and dual mass flywheel, front cv joints falling apart and track rod ends failing regularly. Have had the landy for a few months now and yes it has required a couple of bits done but nothing major and certainly "touchwood" nothing as serious as my last two cars, it has not had anything fail on it and the only problems i have had would be best described as quirks of the landy. Its a great car to drive and i thoroughly enjoy it.
 
felt just like you six weeks ago but took the plunge and bought a disco

havn't regretted a SINGLE MINUTE since then

look around for a while - don't buy the first one you see - i looked at about a dozen over a 2 week period and found a great one 12 miles down the road.

as per previous posts good servicing is everthing - mine had full main dealer service history upto 18 months ago and then landrover specialist.

don't be put off by the scare stories - maybe we should all start posting that we've done 1500 miles in the past six weeks with no problems whatsoever & enjoyed every second of it - i know I have :).
 
got mine 2 weeks ago done 995 miles so far no probs full s hist good cond 200tdi 175.000 miles paid a grand:)
 
Bought my 96 TDi 2 months ago upon arrival in Ireland. Paid 3500 euros for it with 200,000km on the clock (cars are expensive in Ireland).
Only discovered it had air con after I bought it (sight unseen from ebay).

So far done 8000 km in it as my daily commute totals 130km and it is used weekends with the whole family and 2 dogs! 8000km in 2 months is a lot and so far I have replaced 2 light bulbs and thats it!

It does need the front pads replacing now but I bought them from halfords for under 40 euros so I am more than a happy chappy. Love the car, I can see over other traffic, very comfy and I know if the weather turns bad, I will still get to work (as long as other drivers haven't blocked the road!)

It seems relatively economical but makes me gulp when I fill the tank (nearly 20 gallons). Only 'complaint' is that it could do with a bit more poke, especially when leaving junctions or overtaking but I guess thats not a fault, it is a fact of life with a large heavy 4wd vehicle with a relatively small engine.

Anyway, thats my 2 cents worth.

I knew i was asking for it by singing the disco's praises earlier, i cant believe i have been out and done about 15 miles and got home to realise that the rear end is sitting a bit lower than normal, checked sensors and compressor and found that the compressor is no longer a functional part of the car!!!!!!!! so now have back end of car sat on floor as i made the mistake of disconnecting the level sensors to see if there was a bad connection, this makes the car drop to the floor. The car is sat on my front garden looking very sorry for itself! the upside is that the dealer gave a years warranty with the vehicle, have phoned them and they said no problem will get a compresor in for you.
So other than a broken compresor i think the disco is fantastic, bit peeved but still like the car!!!!!
 
My Discovery has wrote off 5 cars that were unfortunate enough to stand in my way, and by wrote off, I mean completely paggered them and the Discovery is still going. Friend of mine had a 30mph bump in a shogun and f**ked it.
A Land Rover may break down occasionally, but once all the niggles have been sorted they NEVER give you problems again. You will never regret owning a Land Rover..
Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese vehicles, I even have a Jap 4x4 (Vitara actually) and good as they are, they cannot compete with any Landy, at all. The best 4x4xfar, says it all really!
