Hello all, Im new to the forum. Ive got an M reg 95 discovery 2.5i turbodiesel which ive had for 3 months now, but yesterday the gearbox broke, basicly its a no hoper.

Now hopefully i can source a secondhand gearbox + transfer unit to replace it with.

I was just wondering if anyone has done this procedure and knows how difficult it is, or if theres any hints or tips, anything to look out for as to doing the work. Im fairly competant on car mechanics, i have changed a gearbox on a FWD car before but never a 4WD.

Any help would be much appreciated.

much the same as any other gearbox swap. just fookin heavier.


ps. dont forget to undo the spare propshaft.

Grab yourself a manual of some kind and get the spanners out, you'll probably find it easier than most vehicles, but being a Lnadrover you WILL need a bigger hammer and longer Breaker bar than you have in your toolkit now!

All the manuals cover gearbox removal as it's a fairly regular job for most

If you got the kit and the time do us a stage by stage thread with photos of your progress.

Did a gearbox swap a couple of weeks ago. Same job as most cars, but as has been said, its ****ing heavy. Gravity wills assist you with the removal, three blokes to fight gravity with its replacement.

aye, 4 extra blokes would be even better.

Thanks for the replys, looks like its just the size / weight of the gearbox that will be any problem.

Is there enough ground clearance to remove / insert the gearbox under the car using axle stands or would you need the use of a pit or lift?

Plenty of room on stands, so long as you have decent jacks to lower it down on & lift it up, too many bricks on jack and you can't then roll it out easily.
