Being new to land rovers I'm in need of some help!!

My 300tdi Disco repeatedly lost all power on the way to work this morning. It was very cold this morning -5 at a guess. Seemed to be a real problem when trying to go up hill, and once it had started losing power she wouldn't recover until switched off/stalled. The last time she did it she seemed to be pumping smoke out the back end!!!

This seems a little odd to what my limited mechanical knowledge put down to fuel starvation. She may not have been running on all 4???? definately not well on any of them - foot down and revs moving in the wrong direction!

Any suggestions? I'll try the filter, and have a play with the lift pump but it will probably be very cold tonight and undoubtedly dark just to help me out.

Any help gratefully recieved

Blocked or dirty fuel filter?

Diesel thickens up in the cold, its called waxing (nothing to do with Womans legs, sadly) and it finds the filter more of a struggle certainly if it is dirty/blocked or has air inside.

Check your cooling fan, the viscous coupling might be faulty causing the fan to turn at all times and the engine will struggle to get up to temperature and keep the fuel waxed.

I thought there were some anti waxing additives but wasn't sure how good they were, thanks for the info on that.

I had this problem a while back and it all started when the weather turned really cold.
The smoke I think is something to do with the EGR system and unburnt fuel passing through, can also be blocked inter-cooler, split inter-cooler pipes and all of the above.

As my thing is the sparky bits, I try not to do oily bits and my local dealer fixed it in return for me fitting his HID upgrade kit to his RR.

Barter, its the way forward !!!!!

Go and barter with your dealer then;)

Just make sure he fixes it right this time:rolleyes:

For info your EGR valve re-circulates exhaust gases into the inlet manifold & anyone in there right mind blanks off the EGR valve asap as otherwise it will choke up yeh engin and eventualy stick open or not close properly.:)

You mean the little metal thingy in the pipe flange, got the T shirt for that one, installed it when we first bought the Disco.

Ermmmmm! Bolted onto your exhaust manifold and joins the pipe up from the inter-cooler.Norm is to put a blanking plate on, better still blanking plate, bin yeh egr and get an after market straight silicon pipe with out the egr conection.

Also worth pointing out that if it's never been done before and yeh lumps done 100k plus yeh manifolds probably already full of black sludge:eek:

Thats the one. Glad I got it right !
