I've managed to get a spanner on to it, but they don't make it easy do they? Ìve got a filter kit that I didn't get around to fiting on the previous Disco, so I think I'll fit that while I'm there and then fill the box up. The litre (if that) of ATF that came out was pretty brown. Might do a few miles on that and then change it again.
@Alpinejim , it came undone at the gearbox end, rather than the cooler. I thought the cooler end was a push on type connection?

I would fit/fill then run, then fit the new filter with more new fluid. You still don't know if the box has suffered, save the filter for the next 1:D
You may find you need quite a bit more fluid than normal as its been pumped out, and the cooler may have drained a bit.

I'm in two minds about the filter. Saving it for when I knew the box was OK did cross my mind, but then I'd like to catch any crud that's in there now. I don't think they're expensive, and it'll be a bargain if it helps save the box!
I've only got a about a litre out, so I've bought plenty just in case.
 
For the extra work I would just fill. take it for a drive up the road (5-10miles) if its damaged bad it would show up pretty soon;).

Then decide if the extra work is worth it.

I've dropped the sump and cleaned it out, no lumps of metal on the magnet, fitted a new filter and refilled - it only took about a litre to fill the sump. Started the engine and filled again, moving through the gears etc, took a bit more fluid but not much.
Put it back on the ground but no drive still.
I suspect an airlock, as its really taken hardly any fluid compared to its capacity.

Covering all my options, can anyone recommend a garage in the Surrey / Hants area that good with this sort of thing? Keith Gott I know about, but just wondering if there are any others I'm unaware of....

You could give Ashcroft a call, they must have seen this before.

The connection at the top of the box is the flow to the cooler (except in lockup). On mine I just refilled, didn't even drain it, to avoid adding any other unknowns (and I HAD to get it off the road and into the drive anyway) and hoped, and all was OK. You said your drive was on a slope. Could it be this is too much of a slope to fill the box properly? Mine has run for a few hundred miles since with no apparent difference to before the incident. I only managed to get 5l in, but, as I said, I didn't drain it first to get that last drop out.

The slope is probably only 5-10 degs, but I had axle stands at the front so it was pretty level.
How long would it take to fill a new, empty box? Just wondering if I should leave it idling for a while, it must take the pump some time to fill up the torque converter, cooler etc, if we assume the system was mostly empty?
 
I guess it would take some time to get all the air out, I've not been unlucky enough to experience it. The pump must be running to have taken in any fluid at all. It may just be a case of "keep on trying" until enough air is expelled. I believe "new" boxes are supplied with the torque converter already filled. Sorry I can't be of any more help here.
 
IT LIVES!!
After having tried and failed earlier, I dropped it off the stands and went in to avoid the weather and and have a sulk. Maybe tilting it did the trick and moved some air, I don't know, but I had another go a few hours later and this time it started taking fluid. I got 6 litres in there in total, and a good sign that it might work was when I saw the revs drop slightly when I selected drive or reverse.
Just taken it for a wizz round the block and it seems OK, proof of the pudding will be if it locks up at 50ish on the way to work tomorrow.
