Heavy Breather

Well-Known Member
I have a 97 300tdi, the other half went for a short run in it and on the way back as she tried to change gear the pedal dropped to within 2" of the floor, she managed to change gear and get home but by then couldn't change gear at all as the pedal was rock bottom, no pressure on the pedal at all. I changed the slave cylinder (cheapest option) cleared all the air out which took ages but now the pedal is solid about half way down, like the brake pedal. A mechanic friend thinks that the push rod may have gone through the drive plate?? Sounds a big expensive job.
Any ideas if this is likely to be correct or other possables????:(:(

I agree with Dent, sounds like your clutch release bearing has seized & melted your clutch fork. Either way it's a gearbox out job.

Clutch fork, worn through.
Best to fit a full clutch kit as the box is out .

The clutch is the cheap part of the job!! Not a job i could do so will have to fork out to get it done, last time i tried to book a job in at my local landy garage there was a month waiting list, he's good and honest tho.
I hope i can get it done in time for the wales trip!!!

The fork pivots on a ball spigot in the bell housing-this is what wears/punches thru-Make sure a strengthened new fork/heavy duty fork is fitted (extra strap welded on back) so it cannot do it again. It is a diy job ,awkward rather than difficult, see here:Discovery clutch change - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

Might be a DIY for you, but not for me:D Apart from the time my back aint up to that sort of weight, even lying down LOL That is a crackin link tho and looks easier than i thought but still beyond me i'm afraid..

Carnt comment on the clutch as mines a auto ! but nice to see somebody on here from where i was born and grew up ,sunny Salford !!!!!!!

Me and stu did mine a few months ago. Hired an engine crane to lower and lift the gearbox, made it loads easy lol. As said above thou replace the clutch kit and fork. No need to lie down either, i was sat up under mine

At huge expense its booked in tomorrow for a full clutch and fork, all i have to do is pay the credit card bill when it comes:eek:

try using hydrolic fluid instead of chip fat in the clutch reservoir

Why?? Would it make a difference? LOL
I don't suppose you've got a 17m ratchet spanner that might be mine? I lost it either on the trip to wales or a mate of mine has it and i hate losing stuff, its never you're crappy stuff either:rolleyes:
