so i am having alot of problems with my disco 1. it is a 97. i replaced the tires. alternator......twice. thermostat and gasket. water pump. now the timing cover gasket is bad. wtf. so it has over heated like 50 times. yet some how this amazing truck just keeps going! it wont stop! i need to fix it though. so i am looking at doing the timing while im in there anyway. truck has 180k. any ideas on what else i should do while its apart? any special tools need or anything to do the job?


also i have no heat. i bought it with the heater bypassed and i hooked it back up. tried to use a bottle of heater core leak repair but it didn't fix it. if i have the heater hooked up it over heats. so i un hooked it again. im freezing my rear off. were can i find a detailed walk threw with pics on how to replace the heater core?
 
presuming it still overheats with heater matrix bypassed,feel the radiator once engines hot(top hose should be hot too then ) it should be all over the rad core if not replace it
 
The Landrover Discovery is not a truck it is classed as an estate car .What model do you have ie V8, diesel, 300 ,200 ?.
 
My J**p Cherokee was classed as a truck to avoid US CAFE regs. The OP's spelling suggests that (s)he may hail from that side of the pond and I wouldn't be surprised if LR classified the Disco as a truck over there for the same reason.

In which case I'm guessing it's a V8 with aircon.

Not got a lot of experience with V8s but a Haynes manual is what you want.

Bad news: you can't pull the heater matrix without breaking the aircon circuit. You needs a specialist to degas it. Then remove the middle of the dash, do something mysterious with the aircon bits (manual just says "dealer only" here but you sound bright), disconnect the heater pipes and pull the matrix.

I managed it on a Citroën, can't be any worse on a Rover.
 
i will be getting a Haynes, and yes im from the us. but i get better help from people on the other side. yes it has aircon. the only frikin thing that works right on the whole truck. the dealer said there is no heater matrix because it is a disco 1. and ty digging i try my best. been a self taught mechanic my whole life and love it. but its always best to research a new task so it do sent get screwed up. you never stop learning till ur dead
 
There's no heater matrix on a Series 1 but that was the 1940s. I'm pretty sure Discos didn't use the aircon or electric for heating. (Mine's aircon-free, with a standard heater, which is good new for me).

Easy check: Are there coolant hoses running behind the engine into the firewall? If so, you've got a heater matrix. They don't put those in for fun.

(If I'm wrong, somebody will be along shortly to correct me).

I used to spend time on US-based forums when I had problems with the XJ so I know you go where the knowledge is.
 
I'm not sure about the States but in this country a 1997 V8 has a 3.9 engine ,does your CAR have a distributor and coil if it does its a 3.9 from memory the 4.0 has coil packs ?.
 
Does it have a distributor coil and leads , if it does then it may be the same as mine I had a problem a while back were the engine over heated and blew a hose I thought it was head trouble but I put some cleaner in the rad changed the hose's new water pump and got the air out of the water system (not that easy) now the gauge never go's above normal.
