I have a disco td5 auto and the gearbox is playing up. What's happening is it sticks between gears until revs are high, above 4000, then it will go up a gear but with a hell of a bang. I changed the oil and filter about 4 or 5000 miles ago. So I am asking what to look for to repair this fault. OR will it need to be a new gearbox.

What colour was the fluid you drained?

Quantity? should of been around 4.2 litres from the sump.

Have you tried shifting it manually?


Any EML lights?

Diagnostics?
 
Have to ask, did you use the proper procedure to change the oil?
Engine running, go through the gears while topping up the oil.
Better with two people, Top up the gearbox until it runs out the filler hole, with the engine running, and get the plug back in before you stop the engine.
If you did it this way, your levels will be fine. Also when you drain the autobox you only get about 75% of the oil out. After a change you should change it again after about 500 miles.
If you did all that, my apologies.
 
The fill procedure is..

1 Top up cold with the engine off until it flows out the filler hole.. - roughly 2.3 litres. pop plug in.
2 start the engine and run it through the gears pausing for 3 seconds in each..
3 top up again till it runs out, with the engine running..
4 run through the gears again..

And you're done..

you should get roughly 4.3 litres in

changing the fluid replaces 40-50%

Yes Henry I tried it manually with no effect. The oil I got out was dark but red sort of colour going in when I changed the filter also around 4 or 5000 miles ago.
As for eml lights it seems they have a mind only known to themselves ever since getting the car.

If that's the case you need to offer unlimited tea and cakes for someone local to plug in a Nanocom or Hawkeye diagnostic to read for fault codes.

I did all that but thank you. I got told when I was talking to people about doing oil change. First time I have come across this method.
