Hi :)
can anyne tel me if it's possible to replace just the barrel on the ignition of my L reg (93) disco ? We've lost the only key??
also My Lanny has come out of gear and I can't get it to drive it's staying in 4 wheel drive and I can'tget it back. Not sure about the diff gear never used it? and don't want to drive round in 4x4 it sounds dead clunky specially when changing gears (normal gears). Any advice sincerely apreciated. I tend to look under the bonnet when things go wrong?? For Ages!!! Mad that innit?? specially since I haven't got a clue what I'm looking at:confused:

you wont find much to do with the gearbox under teh bonnet its all under teh floor :D

it doesn't look like you can just change the ign barrel you will have to change the whole lock assy

Hi G man
and thanks for the reply my chap has taken off the iggy we just need a new one now or maybe a locksmith? I've just enquired about 1 and he tells me he can make me a key but if someone has the lost key they can also use it? No good so I asked would this also work the immobiliser? He claims it would because the immob is built into the door central locking on an old type Lanny?? Surely not? that means that anyboy who opens the driver door with even a pair of scissors will deactivate it an be able to drive off?? That's easy innit? for that service he would relieve us of 60 quid. For what?? when I have other similar keys that open the driver's door and even get the igition. But I'm not sure if it would start because I took the battery off for security but surely it'snot so simple? no point in havin 1??

Change the whole thing (ign lock) - about £36 from paddocks or ebay.

By the way - its ALWAYS in 4x4 the only thing you may want to check is the diff lock. In normal use the little lever should be over towards the big gear lever.

Hi mark
Yes you can just change the barrel on the disco. and its easy ive done it. Take off the casing around the column there are two bolts that connect around the column I think there 8 mm, disconnect these then there is a connection for the wireing further down under the dash disconnect this and hey presto its off. And then you guessed it to replace ( reverse procedure ). On your other problem with the gearing problem try rolling the car forwards while changing the gear it helped me when it happened on my disco.
Hope this helps mate

If you need to drive it but you haven't got a new ign. barrel/lock thingy yet do this. Remove the old one as said above, but instead of unpluging the wiring undo the small screw you will find on the end of the lock unit where the wires go in. You can then remove the ignition switch but still start and run the car as normal just by turning what remains of the switch with a srewdriver or even just with your fingers. I drove my old disco like that for nearly 2 years cos I couldn't be arsed to fit the new switch.
