My lovely neighbour is looking for 4x4 pre-winter and he's long admired my varied ownership of RRs and Discos and I've, perhaps wrongly, steered him away from the 3s (sorry @gstuart) but I wonder if anyone including Gary has a decent word or otherwise about the 4's?

From what I’ve read the D4s are supposed to be a lot better , along with the 8 x speed box that came in around 2012, however it’s reports of the cranks snapping that would concern me, therefore I wouldn’t buy one without getting a warranty with it

Lovely motors , have a look on the disco forum, plenty of further advice there ref the D4

I never used to like them but if I still need a large motor in the future and fortunate enough would get a D4

I had a guy ask me about discos the other day and I gave him my standard land rover reply which is, if you cant afford 25mpg and cant diy dont buy one!

Im loath to recommend anything to anybody especially a land rover, Ive had them for years, so their foibles are normal fare to me, but people coming from normal cars might not be so tolerant of their er habits.

D3 span it cranks shells or snapped the crank or blew the motor when the oil pump/cam belt tensioner failed and all the D4 owners said D4 much better blah blah blah and here we are less than four years later and theres always a report of another snapped crank or strange engine noises making the engine scrap on the D4 section.

Haha - hope you well too. It's getting a bit serious here but the weather at the moment alleviates much of the depressive air. I think he has been looking at a number of 4x4s and hopefully have put him off the Ford Warrior and the like. The main worry about the D3 was the word that the engine has to come out to top up the 'screen wash and other nasty stories. How's your D3? Sparkling I guess. Have a good week-end .

Good to hear ur well , me I’m laid up at the moment and climbing the wall, ripped my back out , Again, lol

I’ve also heard many myths about the D3 , ie the body has to come off to replace the rear belt, turbo , but can all be done with the body on

Rear belt in skilled hands can be changed in an hour

Have made a lot of progress with mine , really do like it , know it takes looking after but don’t mind in the least , wasn’t saying that when I was changing the rear upper wishbone, what a @&@&#&#&@ job that was

Weather here is heavy rain, suppose to be snow in the next few days , also won’t come to anything

Has he looked at the jags and volvos yet

D4 is a very capable, comfortable vehicle, 8 speed gearbox is certainly very smooth, they need good maintenance, electric/ automatic handbrake etc
As per lynall, 25- 30 mpg, but a lovely drive

The Range Rover sport knocks spots off it tho!
 
There is a lovely D3 2.7 that belongs to a farmer around me.

It has 227k on it and apparently it's on the original engine, apart from the turbos and belts!! :D

I quite like 'em and if this diesel dilemma ever lifts i can see myself with one.. ;)
 
Although not an owner. I did have a test drive for a couple of days in a D4 so can I join? :)

I found the vehicle very quite in the cab I didn’t know it was in a diesel until I got out, so I nearly purchased one, but the LR dealer wouldn’t give me what I wanted to part x my car, so I went next door and did the deal I wanted with Jaguar, I never wanted a diesel or seven seats and it was far to big for my use, but it was nice anyway.
As for a RRS it was an uncomfortable ride on certain roads which the D4 didn’t suffer from, D4 has softer suspension perhaps.
So quiet, seven seats, softer suspension, if u like diesel, and it looks better than the D3 then go for it.

I think RRS has ACE or a newer version of the D2 setup, which may explain the harsher ride?

Hi Gary - sorry about the back but I can see the problem - all that squirming and pulling and pushing the wishbone. I think my neighbour has surprisingly gone for a Mitsubishi. There's one outside his house at the mo, a 17 reg, so I'll keep an eye on him. It's small and not sure what model is it is.
The Rangey is absolutely wonderful but I'm concerned about the low mileage: I'm just not getting out other than to the shops so probably doing about 30 a week if I'm lucky. We have a fringe of snow up on the moors this morning about ten miles or so away but that will be gone soon - all the locals are saying it's going to be bad winter. But you'd know all about those down in Kent.
And love the pic of the Landy - they're a fabulous character, it took a while for them to grow on me when they came out. I'd decided nothing could replace the D2 TDi and then gradually swallowed my pride and said, yeh, they're pretty darn good.
Hope the back gets better - I've heard alcohol (in a glass) might help subdue the agonies.

Oops - I'll open the window and stop dreaming. I've been in a bit of a panic since I got an email from the lottery folk saying they'd got news for me about my ticket. £5.50 - never mind, better than a kick in the teeth. or a D2TDi :p

I asked as I was sure when the first 10p engiens started to blow their motors from failed oil pump drives, there was at least one D2TDI running about, think it was in one of the mags?
